Matt Gaetz declared his intent to follow through on his threatened rebellion against Kevin McCarthy, saying he will file a motion to vacate the House speaker.
Did anyone else literally laugh out loud when they saw this headline? The problem isn’t House Speaker McCarthy nearly as much as it is the GOP itself. The party supposed to walk in lockstep no longer does, so any GOP speaker is destined to fail at this point.
If this succeeds, there will be deathwatch bets on how long the next one lasts, because it ain’t gonna be long. Liz Truss’ head of lettuce in Britain might actually be a picture of longevity compared to this fool, because once McCarthy is toppled, every single one of them will take aim at the new one demanding new deals.
And all Congressional government will stop. Again.

I’m okay with that. Our forefathers assumed that the average person would vote to support their constituents. But instead, we got mofos voting against their own beliefs because “the other team” proposed it.
The Democrats only started playing the lockstep game after Republicans mastered it for decades. And honestly, people breaking rank and forcing bipartisanship and making concessions is what we are supposed to be doing.
Completely agreed. I’m not holding my breath, but the absolute best thing that we could do would be to get rid of first-past-the-post voting and bring in some form of ranked choice, which would end the dual-party setup we have right now. There’s nothing like having multiple parties and multiple aisles to cross to force people into working with each other. What we have now is a two-party hostage situation, and I’d love to see that end. But to do that we have to get ranked choice voting in.
There is no way the average American will ever be able to comprehend anything more complicated than “my tribe” vs “not my tribe”
Also ranked choice voting got NYC Mayor Eric Adams. The election took way longer than it should have and they ended up with the "centrist"candidate that should have never gotten elected and disappointed both sides
What sucks about this attitude is that despite the clownshow of conservative PMs in Britain, the only thing more pathetic has been the political opposition. Hate hate to be a doomer, but it could go that way in the US too.

Yeah but democracy works when all sides are constantly miffed.
