So I have a rather simple question, where do you all backup your music, movies and photos to that’s stored on your NAS?

Music, various places. Dropbox and several random devices.

Movies and TV I don’t backup. I can “rip” them all again if I need to, and have done on multiple occasions. But backups would be costly with the sheer volume I have. 170tb of s3 block storage is expensive, and so is additional cold hard drives to keep it all on.

That doesn’t need a backup from my side. That’s the reason we use torrents and private trackers, right? We have a dedicated group that collectively collect files and share them among each other

I backup the videos I transcoded myself on Google Drive (encrypted, Google can’t see the content), since I buy the extra storage anyway.

Bilingual MKVs (English and French (preferably Canadian French when available)) are kinda rare online, and they help me save some storage instead of having two copies of the same movie for each language.

I don’t nas, but I suggest a combination of offline drives, cloud services or remote hosts, and just ignoring data that is easy to recreate like builds and software installs.

The key is to keep the data organized in such a way that you know which parts deserve which strategy.

I have a Synology NAS so I use Hyper Backup and upload my backups in the Synology C2 Cloud. Of course all my files are encrypted first before they get uploaded.

Media I don’t take as seriously as other backups. Except for a few hard to find ISO’s, I have a Fractal R5 case that I’ve crammed full of all the rando extra drives I have sitting round, and pool those all together in TrueNAS. So far it’s more than the total storage of my media NAS. It gets a monthly backup automatically.

I use an rsync bash script and a 1TB SSD. I keep media unencrypted, and use Veracrypt containers for any sensitive data I need to back up.
