Israeli government resorted to desperate efforts to deny responsibility for the attack and instead blame Hamas.

(Several independent reports since have lent credence to Israeli claims that the culprit may have been a misfired Hamas rocket).

This makes it sound like the Israeli government is to blame for something that they actually didn’t do. Can someone explain this?

Well when you cut out the middle section it tends to distort things

After Gaza’s al-Ahli hospital was hit by a mysterious blast on October 17, killing numerous civilians, the Israeli government resorted to desperate efforts to deny responsibility for the attack and instead blame Hamas.

A deliberate military attack on a hospital is as clear a war crime as they come, and Israeli officials seemed to understand that were they pinned for the blame, it would be devastating to Israel’s international standing and further turn global sentiment against its military campaign.

(Several independent reports since have lent credence to Israeli claims that the culprit may have been a misfired Hamas rocket).

Not to mention the desperate measures links to a Reuters article about “Fact Check: Video of missile strike near Gaza hospital predates October 2023 war”, showing how some of the propaganda being pumped out to help ensure they did not get ‘pinned for the blame’ was faked; A rather desperate measure one might say.

That only makes it more confusing. There’s nothing in the Reuters article that even suggests Israel had anything to do with that footage.

If I’m understanding it correctly, the original posted article is suggesting that Israel was desperate to cover up something that turned out to be exactly what they said it was. And the evidence is a fake video someone posted that has nothing to do with Israel.

        What?
