Meta just announced that they are trying to integrate Threads with ActivityPub (Mastodon, Lemmy, etc.). We need to defederate them if we want to avoid them pushing their crap into fediverse.
If you’re a server admin, please defederate Meta’s domain “threads.net”
If you don’t run your own server, please ask your server admin to defederate “threads.net”.
extremely weary of any call to arms like this, especially when i am exclaimed to “need” to do something. the block function exists in almost all federated platforms, including the ability to block entire instances; use it and, like META: stop pushing YOUR OWN AGENDA on everyone else.
Then just use a different server? Facebook has an agenda too and the rest of us would prefer an occasional break from it.
You personally don’t “need” to do anything but decide which server meets your own standards. We are currently discussing this server’s standards.
what? all federated servers i use have a block function. again, why are you telling me what to do? and this discussion on “server standards” – if we’re being honest – is really just a discussion about censorship. you’re promoting censorship. congratulations.
I’m simply suggesting you find a server that agrees with you. We both have freedom of association.
thanks for the basic lesson in freedom of speech. had never seen that xkcd comic before so it was extremely enlightening. i feel 100x smarter now.
do you think the creator would be ok with just censoring millions of people for no reason other than they happen to use threads, though, do you think that is what the comic is promoting? or maybe it’s more of a commentary on hate speech and the consequences of bigotry in a society with free speech, ever think of that? just a thought.
anyways, enjoy your mass censorship.
Censorship is a valid moderation tool when used appropriately, I don’t understand why people can’t understand this. So yes, congratulations, they are promoting censorship, which is a good thing in this case. thankfully someone isn’t in the “omg freeze peach” club that is neutral on literally every topic in the entire world no matter how incredibly a bad idea it is.
A lot of people absolutely support censorship in the case of keeping literal garbage and spam out of their feeds, but a vocal minority scream about censorship as if it’s always a bad thing and should never be used.
All federated servers also have a defederate function. It was added to ActivityPub for a reason, and that reason isn’t to be never used because of some sacred idea that servers have to be 100% open, innocent until proven guilty, when that is a moderation model that has failed time and time again.
Censorship is a valid moderation tool, no one necessarily disagrees with that; but censorship without a valid reason is not valid moderation. If you don’t like Meta, then I guess that’ fine; but I don’t necessarily have any problem with it from a “it exists” perspective and sharing space with users from that space may (or may not) add to our communities; we don’t really know at this point, but for some reason we are already advocating FULL censorship of the platform? I don’t see valid reasons from you or anyone else in this ““THREAD”” outside of fearmongering.
And yes, you’re right; de-federation EXISTS in the tool, so does blocking; why not use the latter on an individual – personal – user level, instead of this massive preemptive censorship campaign that is really – just – based on personal politics and almost nothing else? And just because a tool exists doesn’t mean it should be used; you use it when it’s appropriate, not because it simply exists.
*you also vastly overlooked my point aobut biggotry and hate speech regarding censorship; don’t really appreciate being strawman’d but whatever.
