Hi there,

it is quite some time since I last installed the OsmAnd+ app. Now, today I look into the store and see OsmAnd~ with OsmAnd+ all over the description and no hint on why the name changed.

I know, that this is not a store related question per se, as F-Droid is not respinsible for the descriptions and naming, however, I thought maybe some folks here can get me updated on what I missed the last years behind my rock…

Thanks in advance for any help!

I think it is renamed to distiguish the paid play store version from the free f-droid version which is technically the same app.

know for sure but my guess is that the + version is the paid version on play store with unlocked features. Since this is the full free version on fdroid they changed the name to clarify the difference.

Edit: Found on Wikipedia under licensing that this does seem to be the reason. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/OsmAnd

      Thanks, that totally clarifies it!

Could it be, that ages ago, they named it the same but with the F-Droid version (also technically, because no GSF/Play Store) not being able to make that in-app purchases? Whatever, maybe I’m remembering that incorrect, it’s all pretty fuzzy and blurred in my memories… I’m getting old ;-) To have different names is definitely the best solution.

Osmand+ is the paid play store version, Osmand~ is the open source version. I believe there’s no significant differences.

I’ve been wondering this for a long time too actually. Perhaps the name was taken?
