There already is federation of deletion. It’s not even something that needs to be implemented.

I have less of a defeatist attitude about privacy. Same way I don’t think absitence is the only true way of contraconception. Privacy, yes, even if public spaces is possible. It’s not easy, it won’t just happen, but it is achievable. Needs a lot of work from a lot of people, but it is doable.

It doesn’t matter if data has already been propagated somewhere else. On that instance, data needs to be able to be fully deleted. For the matter of deletion, it is irrelevant where the data might have been pushed or mirrrored to, that is a seperate issue, which still needs to be dealt with. But one cannot argue that deleting is pointless or needn’t be implemented, just because “public” data is already mirrored elsewhere. The people running “elsewhere” have their own compliance to deal with.

Reddit still has to ensure what is deleted on their end, is actually deleted (which they don’t, as we saw during the whole protest thing with delted comments being restored)

The fact that archive websites exist doesn’t change that. A request under gdpr to such a site would have to result in deletion as well.

Sure someone who doesn’t host or specifically target EU citizens can ignore it at their leisure, but I doubt every Lemmy instance is hosted somewhere in non EU areas.

You are slightly wrong. The GDPR applies to everyone dealing with personal data on the regular, which you always have to assume with open text boxes. There have been plenty rulings already imposing fines on individual, private citizens for their misconduct in violation of the gdpr.

While Lemmy as a system might be exempt, anyone running Lemmy for sure isn’t, as long as it regularly processes data of EU citizens, which it does.

As for the devs, the gdpr does require privacy by design. One could argue the Devs themselves aren’t running it at all, so their software doesn’t have to adhere to it, but individual instance hosts could still be hit with fines for running it as is.

Netflix and Amazon prime simply won’t work with VPNs active, which I use for work and privacy towards my ISP.

Took us forever and is still contested now and again, but we managed to force the sales process yo include product managers or owners. I am well aware and you are right. But it is a sign that hope isn’t entirely lost just yet. A lot of modern right wing nutjobs are as stupid as they are racist. So their movements might lose important figures to law enforcement before they gain that unstoppable mass.

With how everything is moving to the right and far right, AfD at all time highs, cases against right wing assholes being ignored, dropped or never even taken, police and military being undermined and having plenty of these assholes in their own ranks, it is good to see action being taken.

Their thoughts and beliefs aren’t fringe anymore. They’ve made it well and truly into the middle of society in all German speaking countries. It went so far that I had to keep copies of the instructions on how to deal with these idiots, on my work PC because I have heard this kind of rethoric from our CEO.

Gifs work if you add them from your PC rather than from an URL. Download it, pull it into chat, gift works. It’s not as easy as it should be, but at least it has a workaround

I also remeber the plague of malvertising with drive by viruses and Trojans. I haven’t had a single positive virus on my systems in over a decade thanks to adblockers.

I sure hope the courts toss that thing. It would be the single worst violation of peoples privacy since the internet became a thing. It’s incredible that lobbyists and police unions have this much impact on policy creation.

Germany introduced some digital ID functionality so you can do certain things online rather than having to go talk to someone in person, but that means that your ID isn’t just a card anymore but has some digital elements to it as well. And apparently the apps to use that stuff are Windows based.

I think we’re both German. My ID doesn’t have that yet, I dread the day where I can’t renew it without all that nonsense.

Thanks for the long response. I was thinking Mint maybe, had some experience with it a few years ago. But it’d replace both my private and work stuff over, so some gaming, too (mainly through steam). Stability is key to me. My current Windows install hasn’t needed anything for 4 years or so, so I’m absolutely not going for Arch. I need this stuff daily, I cannot waste time trying to troubleshoot for hours or relying on backups, etc.

I mean, I’d like to. But some of my work requires me to use stuff like Adobe products and I find it massively easier to keep up to date with what these tools can do, if I can just muck around in my private projects (I actually care about) and then transfer the knowledge to my work stuff. I’ll mull the idea some more time. Not really interested in dual booting at all, though that might be a solid solution, but windows simply deciding to kill everything else, even if its on a different disk entirely is not a prospect I relish.
