AI is absolutely “a thing”, not sure there’s really a debate about that. The desperation here is they want to be the first company to completely immerse itself in Generative AI, but they’re moving so fast they’re just shoving every experiment they can come up with down their customers’ throats.
AI is going to be a huge part of the future, but Microsoft might not be a part of that future if they fuck up with over implementation of nascent tech.
Linux is useless except for software freedom.

I guess part of software freedom, for me, is that I don’t care what other people choose to do, I just use and recommend Linux and other open source software wherever I can.

Tl;Dr: The most hateful and problematic instances that exist were wisely blocked by Meta, and the admins have found a workaround that lets them see Threads posts, but doesn’t let Threads users see their posts.
Which is silly for scalpers to try to profit off of this. You may get some short-term profits, but there are plenty of ways to circumvent copy protection on PS1 that are much cheaper and easier to work with than this.
It’s also seemingly just an experiment that a dev decided to sneak into the game, so there’s no guarantee that the loaded game will actually play reliably.
I’ll wait for the hype to cool off and some real data about performance to exist before I consider buying it.

There are a lot of people out there calling Hamas “freedom fighters”, and calling the 10/7 attacks “resistance”. It’s not really a straw man. Expressing these kinds of violent opinions comes with deserved consequences, and when these people do fuck around and find out, I expect to see plenty of “because I was pro-Palestine” crocodile tears.
To be fair, ActivityPub is an open standard, so corporate adoption was a guarantee following any amount of success.
As an advocate for ActivityPub, I want to see more entities using it. The fact that Threads and Flipboard will interoperate will likely convince more corporate actors to join the fediverse, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing.
There will always be instances that block out the entire corporate fediverse, and those communities will still thrive alongside instances that do federate with the corporations. People will have freedom of choice without having to exist in a bubble, and I think that’s great.
The strength is in defederation, where communities can decide who they want to play with. I’m not personally worried about big companies like Meta embracing ActivityPub because their bad behavior will have consequences for them, and the community is starting off vigilant and aware. If they play nice, the community might loosen its grip, but if they act exploitive or abusive, they’ll get shut out from most of the community forever.

If you’re into desktop functionality, better VNC implementations are badly needed. It’s not intuitive on most desktop distros how to configure a remote desktop solution correctly. We’re nowhere near the “it just works” quality that RDP has on Windows.
If you’re into hardware, I suspect there’s work that needs to be done with BD-R DL/XL support. I don’t think I’ve ever successfully burned a multi-layer Blu Ray disc across multiple distros, burners, and drives.

Some Norwegian driving schools are making it policy not to buy Teslas as training vehicles because they use non-standard controls. They only want training vehicles that use standard controls, because that’s the best way to teach a student.
This makes sense. If most cars have a stalk, teach students to drive that way, not with the weird car that’s slowly transforming into an Xbox. If students own a Tesla, they can still learn to drive it, the driving schools are just unlikely to have that model in their lot.
