Yet another case in point of how shitty mastodon’s name is. Even its abbreviations are trash. The best time to change its name was before it started. The second best time is NOW. And the longer they go without fixing this, the worse it will be. As long as mastodon never rebrands, it is doomed to fall behind scummy oligarch controlled trash like threads.

  • Critical mass of users on social media platforms.

Back on Usenet decades ago they called it the “Eternal September”.

It used to be that every September, fresh University students would gain access to Usenet for the first time, and there would be a rough adjustment period where they don’t yet know the ropes, the lingo, the etiquette, the unspoken rules, and the expectant decorum, etc. Then one year, home internet service providers made Usenet accessible to ANYONE who subscribed… And from that day forward, it was like September every day, all year round.

Now the general riffraff are flocking to bsky because even THEY see that Twitter is sinking. This surge of new users have brought all their bad habits with them. Bsky must adapt or it too will fall.

It’s surprisingly wholesome hearing people who used to hate women in their earlier lives suddenly illustrating with profound astonishment how much happier and how much more whole they began to feel when they started taking estrogen…

Even if they’re still describing it with internalized self-inflicted contempt and disgust.

And it makes me almost dare to hope, “maybe this gal will realize that she feels good because it’s RIGHT…?”

  • the even more disturbing trend of late is that

    1. nobody made any decisions
    2. nobody did any specific work
    3. nobody was available to do the work

because an AI generated the entire content on the basis of an off-hand suggestion plugged in by a Search API directly reading some user’s query and shitting out a vapid, insipid extrapolation of that query in the rough shape of an article on-the-spot and brute force slamming SEO algorithms with keywords so it’s the first ten items you see when the search concludes.

  • For my home internet, I’m pleased to have municipal fiber optic broadband in my city.
I don’t know what the width of the bottleneck is or where it’s located (because there will always be one) but i have never hit it.

I also use T-Mobile for my cellular data.
They were fairly straightforward with me about how it works:
The data transfer bandwidth will never be throttled by ‘decree’,
though it is finite and everyone connected to the same signal tower as I am are all going to have to share whatever is available
up to the hardware limitations of the mobile devices themselves which are connected.
however, after I have downloaded approximately 10 gigabytes of data, my pings are to be de-prioritized. If there is not a lot of activity on the network, then connections establish in a snappy and responsive manner. If there is a lot of network traffic, however, I may have to ‘wait my turn’ while other people who have not downloaded as much get to go first, to an extent. Once the connection is established, the speed of data transfer is just as fast as before. It just takes longer for that connection to be established in the first place.

I am satisfied with this arrangement.
