Backup your stuff
Yubikey is kinda the gold standard IMO. Yes, I know google has their own titan something ~but the other one I know that can rival yubikey in terms of support and longevity would be nitrokey.~ Else I recommend making a poor man’s security key using a keyfile and a flashdrive to secure your keepass database
Edit: forgot about nitrokey’s overly sensational claims about a backdoor on Qualcomm chips a while back, that kinda stained my view on their company now. Just get a yubikey sure theres no firmware upgrades and whatnot but its good enough for now. Also heard good things about onlykeys
Is it dumb that I only backup my docs and anything else I think is important? I can rebuild fairly quickly if something would happen. I ask since I know that people backup a variety of their directories
Copy the totp seed from aegis and use something like keepassxc to generate the codes
Also mint mobile recently but yeah data = money. Had to search up Ashley Madison and I’m sorry you went through that
Fuck but I do have totp already enabled should I just change my password?
Edit: my paranoia got to me I’m gonna just reset my totp seeds and change my password. Some of the info was fake so that’ll protect me a bit. Guess that’s the best you can do for now
Edit 2: they made it a pain in the ass to change your password apparently now they favor only 20 characters max (rip my 35 character password). A nice warning on their website would’ve been really helpful
As a newb I hope one day in my journey, I can look back at this and say “I finally understand this.” Til then thank you, magic man
I usually ask them for their phone
Damn they just keep coming up with shit ideas one after the other
I’m not that person but I’ve been using GrapheneOS for about 8 months now. Setting up an esim was probably the worst thing I had to do but it was still relatively easy. Lmk if you got any questions
Yeah that’s a possibility but that massively depends on the level of surveillance the journalist is under but lets assume moderate. With that in mind, the only method I can think of would be physically hiding the drive/s in the other house (more paperwork needed for the alphabet people) in a place that would still be accessible, with permission of the owner of course. Don’t know how thorough raids are at looking for stuff but I can think of a couple places that may be sufficient if its poor to moderate job. Be screwed if they’re combing the entire place though so the journalist would have to rely on encryption
In fairness their electronics were taken by the FBI so they at least had something besides Google. In hindsight the offsite backup would of protected them from both the FBI and Google if they stored them at a trustee’s home
Damn didn’t even think about that. Do you think they at least encrypted their files?
Goddamn hope this story gets somebody at google’s attention. Off topic, even though it was mentioned in the article, what ended up happening to the dad’s account, was it reinstated? I can’t find an update
Iirc the chipset, QCM6490, will lose support after 2028 meaning the device will get at least 5 years of security updates and not the promised 8. Pretty sure that’s why grapheneOS doesn’t/won’t support it since the company doesn’t keep to their promises
Edit: found grapheneOS’ response again I’m not saying Fairphone is a bad company but the way they are advertising the fp5 seems kinda shady IMO based on the specs of the device. At most you’ll get partial updates after 5 years since Qualcomm will drop support which is still great but don’t assume your device will be as safe as a fully updated device. Then again fairphone may commit to extending the life of the QCM6490 but not sure if they’ll be capable of that so we’ll just have to see. I apologize to anyone who got offended for some reason I was just expressing my opinion based on the track record of the company and the specs of their device
Thats true but I was referring to it being useful for travelers or as a work phone. Just being useful when you don’t want to expose your personal device
Crap meant security updates I’ll edit it in but their phones overall. The company is notorious for not providing full security updates for the promised length which can end up jeopardizing the customer. Then specifically for the fp5 there’s the lack of a secure element and iirc verified boot but I could be mistaken
But don’t most phishing schemes redirect you to a webpage what would scanning “apps” do? Guess it means your email client and SMS messenger
I know you don’t game but a dedicated GPU will be a godsend for video editing. Depending on the budget I would get a used gaming laptop like an Omen or a legion 5
Edit: worst case wait a year for parts and laptops to be really cheap haha.
