A low end laptop, maybe, but anything you need power to do would be rough given the thermal limitations and comparatively weaker processor in the iPhone. I do agree that most could get away with a docked phone instead of a desktop if the implementation was good enough.

The Flying Squid is someone who contributes to Lemmy comment sections a ton. They’re super friendly and also add a lot of discussion. Given the nature of Lemmy being so small though they stand out because they’re often leading discussions. Pretty much just a really good discussion contributor who is super recognizable.

It’s not that we didn’t think it wouldn’t affect us, it’s that Amazon pays unfathomable, life changing amounts of money to their engineers. Don’t get me wrong there are absolutely insufferable people there, but I’d wager most people are there for the money alone.

I was an intern at AWS, and my return offer for full time was $220k per year fresh out of college to do 40 hours work weeks with a 24/7 one-week on call once every two months. My sign on bonus (lump sum on first paycheck) was $60k, or almost the average yearly pay of a US citizen. Unless you came from money, you’d take that offer in a heartbeat. I grew up middle class so money like that was impossible to say no to. I knew what I was getting into, and I tried to get a comparable offer right up until my start date, but few companies will dump over $200k per year on a new grad software engineer.

I got out a few months ago, and it has been the best thing for my mental health. My anxiety is much more manageable, I don’t have week long 24/7 on call shifts, I’m full remote, and my pay is only 10% less. With that said, I wouldn’t change a thing if I went back in time. I have financial stability I didn’t even know was possible, and it gave me a massive headstart in life.

Myself and one other person have been upholding a torrent of the movie Holes since last June. My ratio is over 30, and I can only imagine how large theirs is since they were the only seeder when I downloaded the movie. I’ve cleared out some older torrents since then, but I’ll be damned if Holes ever comes off my home server at this point.

I recently got a $100 PC that’s now an Ubuntu server running your typical qBittorrent/Xarr/Plex/VPN stack, a local web server (for accessing said services), and nginxproxymanager all across docker containers. It’s not powerful by modern standards (i5-7600), but for what I use it for it’s way overkill. It’s currently sitting at 5% memory utilization of the 8GB of RAM it has despite running all that with many active torrents.

That’s peak hoodie and jeans weather. Literally perfect.

When you are holding the magnet in front of the car you are pulling the car along through the magnetic attraction between the magnets, and the car is pulling the magnet back towards itself with equal force. However, you can just pull the magnet away as the car gets closer. When you do so you are transferring the force the car is imparting on you into the ground you are standing on.

If you were to now get on top of the car and hold the magnet in front of it the magnet you are holding would be pulled towards the car, and the car towards it. However, since you are on top of the car, instead of the force the car is imparting on you going into the ground (allowing you to keep moving the magnet away from the car) it would go back into the car. This force going back into the car is identical to the force the magnet you are holding is imparting on the car. As such they cancel each other out and the car does not move.

If you repeat the above, but replace the magnet with a rope, it’s a lot more clear why it doesn’t work. You can’t pull on a rope while sitting on a car and expect the car to move. The magnetic force is the rope, and you pulling on the magnet is the same as pulling on the rope.

Surprisingly, Remarkable tablets, despite not being open source, you can do just about anything with. They allow root SSH access and the backend is a heavily stripped down version of Linux.

I’ve been writing an application to allow customizing splash screens over SSH/SFTP and it’s actually been super easy to work with. The “jailbreak” scene is also super active, and the company has gone the opposite direction of most. They retroactively removed the need for a subscription to cloud sync on all devices, and seem to very much embrace the ridiculous things people have done with their tablets.

The device is also no nonsense and does exactly what it’s designed to do extremely well and no more. No ads, no bloat, no constant internet connection. You could never connect the thing to the internet if you really wanted. Honestly one of the few devices I’ve bought in recent memory that I feel like I wholely own.

Two big downsides are no Bluetooth, and you need a modified hardware device to unbrick the device if you fuck up (jumping type C pins to put the device into recovery). Overall really solid and would recommend.

Say I’m a malicious user who’s using VPN server #22 from ProtonVPN (my personal favorite provider). The victim (CR in this case) isn’t going to see they’re being attacked by someone on VPN server #22 from ProtonVPN, they’re going to see the IP of that server and nothing else.

It really doesn’t matter if they did have that information because no human will be involved. The traffic will be marked as malicious and blocked by some software designed to monitor, identify, and block traffic that looks malicious. This is almost always done based on IP. It’s usually reversed in a few days though because IP addresses change frequently, so there’s no sense in continuing to block traffic from an IP you can’t guarantee belongs to the original attacker.

There are levels to it. As things get more complex the problems get infinitely more strange. As you learn a particular technology the strange things you encounter are often because of a misunderstanding about that technology or the way it works.

Once you hit professional level software engineering (think distributed systems), things are strange in large part because the system you’re working on has hundreds of thousands of man hours poured into it, and is often very complex with 10 different technologies backing it to do various things.
