Torrenting in Germany can cost you hundreds to thousands if you get caught (And they do look for people doing so). Streaming on the other hand is barely worth a fine.

Tbh, the amount of users uninstalling edge is so miniscule, it would not be worth it to mess with them by blocking updates.

This probably comes from the way Edge is integrated into a fuckton of background processes and wasn’t a targeted attack.

I don’t get what the issue is with eliminating unnecessary jobs. It doesn’t create any extra work for the customer (you have to place all items on the conveyer and put them back into the cart either way), it isn’t offloading any extra work to the other employees and it saves anyone involved a fuckton of time.

I’m really surprised so many people here of all places believe any corporation gives a shit about anything but their money. Corporations are never your friend.

I never said valve is a friend, they simply are the more trustworthy party in this lawsuit. Two things about this:

1. I’ve never seen any proof of this MFN clause. I’ve read the Steamworks distribution agreement (which is hidden behind an NDA), I’ve read the steam TOS, I’ve looked through the steamworks documentation that is declared as legally binding in the contract, I’ve looked for screenshots or citations. There is nothing that would even suggest they are interfering with non-steamkey prices apart from what Wolfire games tells the court. (Who are, of course, coincidentally using the same Lawfirm as epic does, which makes this whole thing even more suspicious.)

2. This is the second time this lawsuit is brought up and there are pretty much no complaints from other devs, not even anonymous. Usually when lawsuits like this happen a bandwagon full of people come out to complain, twitter descends into a shitstorm and reddit digs out their aluminium foil hats. But there is absolutely nothing at the moment.

You are free to post any links with proof you have. Maybe the lawsuit will dig up something in Valve’s basement. But as of now, everything we’ve seen is just one big accusation from Wolfire games.

You never owned any software, even before valve. All you ever purchased was a license key that could be revoked at any time.

That isn’t a problem made by valve, it existed far before the whole company was even founded. The underlying issue is the way digital mediums are licensed and the corresponding copyright laws.

That’s not entirely true. Valve forces devs to not sell Steam keys lower on other sites without also going on sale on Steam in a reasonable close amount of time.

I know it sounds the same at first, but it’s a drastic difference. You can generate as many Steam keys as you like and sell then on other sites, Valve won’t see a single cent from these sales. They however still provide their online services and servers for free for all those keys sold on other sites. It is quite reasonable that they force you to match prices since they literally are losing money (albeit not much) if you sell on other platforms. And I don’t mean lost sales, but infrastructure cost.

And additionally is this rule pretty much never enforced. AAA studios have special deals and indi devs aren’t worth the hassle.

1. Running fibre really isn’t as complicated as you make it out to be. The only problem is that you can’t do any 90° turns, so just running it along the walls isn’t possible. And the fact that the lasers each cost about 30€ for your standard 10G connection isn’t really helping either.

And I really would like to see the job where running fiber gets you $200/hrs, i would switvh to there on the spot. The most complicated part is splicing 2 cables together and that isn’t all too hard with the right tools and machines.

2. The article isn’t talking about cables at all, but rather the ethernet protocol that is used as a standard for data transfer for a long time now. It has nothing to do with the debat over fiber vs. copper.

For pictures that problem was fixed barely one month after the hype began. With good prompts and a second round of editing through the AI, that’s a complete non-issue.

That’s only an issue if you torrent your stuff in which case linux wont save you. A windows virus/cryptominer/keylogger/etc. won’t natively work on Linux, but it will work if used with wine.

Doing all that takes about 2 hours. The shady ass tool is also unnecessary since you can manually change the registry entries. Once it’s done I can install anything by double clicking the exe and it runs 99.9% of the time.

Linux meanwhile only takes half an hour to setup and update (if we are talking about a beginner friendly one like mint cinnamon), but you will use a lot more hours trying to get everything to run. There rarely are good drivers for peripherals, to get even slightly more then the most barebone functions of my logitech gear I have to run a shady github project someone slapped together 3 years ago. The adaptive clock on my laptop doesn’t work, I loose about 2 hours of battery life and the touch pad stops working after a few hours.

I dualboot a win10 ltsc version and mint. By now most stuff runs fine on Linux, but it has taken me 10 times the effort to get to that state compared to windows. And even now I occasionally have to fiddle with wine cause it decides that this specific programm isn’t to its liking. And that’s ignoring the issue it was to run anything with anticheat. That requires a VM with GPU passtrough to even remotely work.

You’ve got tax, insurance, retirement plans, trainings…

The average wage will be around 200k. Still a lot for the average person, but not much for an experienced programmer/ sysadmin.

If we are talking about malware and vulnerabilities, home users are a far bigger and easier target then corps.

Corporations have a custom firewall, proxy servers, VPN connections for all clients and double safeties for all important processes. While they are an interesting target for big organisations like terrorists and secret services, they have near to no value for the average Internet thiefe. Even if one could get in, there are no bank accounts lying around with money in them.

Home users have none of that, once you are on their PC you get everything. Sure their bank account will only net you a few thousand on average, but you get it easily.

Non-personalized ads pay a fraction of the money targeted ads can get you.

Non intrusive ads are pretty much just amal banner ads on the side, they pay near to nothing.

Youtube barely makes any money as is, if you introduce even one of these changes they are far into the red again.

Now if we also remove any tracking, then Google has no reason at all to keep it going and will just shut it down.

I despise Google too, I avoid them like the plague, my phone is deggogled and all my apps come from third party storefronts. But YouTube simply is not a profitable business without personalised ads and tracking.

Pretty much all creators on Youtube start with shitty videos you wouldn’t even glance at a second time. If you pre filter all videos then said creators could never get feedback or encouragement and most would’ve stopped long ago.

Great, so you pretty much only host established creators. Nearly all big channels on Youtube started with what is now considered shitty contend. They trained their editing skills over time, bought proper equipment once they really got into it and probably only found their style halfway through their “career”. If YouTube pre-filtered it’s videos, then the site would be dead by now.

Sure you can shove all responsibility to someone else and say they should self host it, but then you also have to acknowledge that peertube and the like eliminate 98% of all content before its made with its cobsiderably higher entry point, and that includes the good and the bad.

Crusader kings 3 (just like all other Paradox Games) doesn’t even have DRM. You can start the whole game without steam or the shitty PDX launcher, so no idea what you are on about. A “cracked” version is the exact same piece of software.

Even creating the boatable USB is already too complicated for 80-90% of users, but considering that we are on lemmy, most people here should be able to do it.

Choosing a beginnen friendly distribution means reading and comparing distros for hours if you are a complete newby. Just googling “easy Linux distro” or something like this will net you 15 different results.

Switching itself is easy if you define it as booting up Linux, but then what? You need drivers for all your hardware, a replacement for the MS office suit, alternatives for lots of programms, to relearn even the most basic commands and shortcuts and you have to manually transfer a lot of savefiles.

And that is ignoring the general pain that setting up your pc again is, especially if you have slow Internet.

It is, in fact, not that easy. It works to hide the warning, but once you reache the stage where they block videos, it won’t help you.

The better option is to block all scripts on YouTube and only whitelist the 2 or 3 that are necessary to watch videos.

I work for the grid too and we also have these. Usually only for bigger substations to transmit measurements and switching states, maybe a bit of telemetry like a tripped fuse.

I hope for dear god that you are remembering wrong and none of them trigger when loosing connection. Whoever thought of that should be immediately fired.

A loss of connection from a single device should never trip a circuit breaker (no idea how the bigger equivalent is called in english), especially if its connected wireless.
