You’re missing the fact that I’m specifically addressing your decision to present “per captia” as being definitive proof of pitbulls being man-killers. I even stated that it’s entirely possible that they could, in fact, truly be man-killers, however the stats could be skewed so “per captia” can’t be the definitive proof.

If you want a real-world example of “per captia” being falsely skewed, look up stats on crime or IQ per race. You’ll find they’re heavily skewed against black people. However, if you continue to dig, you’ll find there are plenty of reasons to question the validity of those stats.

You don’t really understand how statistics work do you? Per capita can still get artificially skewed in favor of one breed or another. For an example, let’s say we have red Legos and blue Legos and statistics say that murderers are more likely to pick red Legos. As a result, more people pick blue Legos because they don’t want to be perceived as murderers, leaving the red Legos for murderers and people who are skeptical or ignorant of the statistics. The result will be that there’s a much higher number of murderers per-captia with red Legos than with blue Legos.

The same can be applied to pitbulls. Create the story that pitbulls are man-killers, and the stats will get skewed as people looking for man-killers buy more pitbulls and people looking for companions intentionally avoid them. The result will be that there are more man-killer pitbulls per capita because that’s what they’re being trained for. It’s called a self-fullfilling prophecy. Maybe pitbulls truly do have a disposition for being man-killers, however their reputation means that the stats will be skewed in favor of the man-killers trait, as more people will buy them to make them man-killers.

Yeah, for real. Pitbulls are the common target because they’re the “vicious dog”. It’s a self-fullfilling prophecy. Talk about how pitbulls are vicious man-killers, people who want vicious man-killers buy them and train them to be vicious man-killers, pitbulls become vicious man-killers. Meanwhile, the people who want a family dog don’t get pitbulls because, well, they’re “vicious man-killers”. The result is that statistics get skewed in favor of the “vicious man-killer” status, leading to people seeing the breed as nothing more than vicious man-killers.

Try qobuz. They’re a streaming service and an online music store. Obviously bandcamp>qobuz when it comes to supporting the artists, but anything you can stream, you can buy and download in flac, mp3, etc. They also have a fair amount of high-res stuff too.

Sync and maybe some other apps already put ads next to posts. Ironically this post specifically had an ad next to it.

As for bargaining power, bargaining for what? Ad revenue? Are you serious? No thank you, you’re asking for reddit but worse. You’ll get ad farmers submitting garbage content overnight. I know Facebook is going to profit off my *waves hand* fucking everything. That’s the price I pay for participating in an open system. That’s the state of the internet right now. Everything gets monetized by everyone except you. If you don’t like it, disconnect. There are literally trillions of dollars against you, any action you take will only make it worse for everyone else, because these companies have the money to force judgements in their favor.

Edit: an analogy I thought of would be this: you’re talking loudly in a small, private park that has no fence. The only thing that indicates that it’s privately owned is a little sign that says, “Property of Lemmy.world”. Anyone passing by on the street can overhear your conversation. Someone decides to set up a viewing platform on the street where they charge money for people to come and gawk at you from the viewing platform. There’s absolutely nothing illegal about doing that. There’s nothing illegal about someone taking notes on what they overheard. There’s nothing illegal about someone selling their notes either. Because they aren’t officially entering the park, there’s no TOS for them to sign, nor an Eula that binds them. Your trying to impose restrictions on someone outside of the park’s jurisdiction. Sometimes, people are successful at doing that, but generally it comes at the detriment of everyone else’s experience.

It looks like there’s a newer version called PabloDraw that was made by the same group. Not sure how good it is or where to find it, but Wikipedia says it adds multi-user support which allows for group draws, which sounds neat.

Counterpoint: we’re in an educational program. The program is about the horrors of the 21st century, including climate change, greed, the rise of AI in a capitalist society, COVID, the return of fascism, the fall of the west and god knows what else. The tech bros, billionaires, politicians, etc aren’t actually real, it’s everyone else who is. Why? Those positions are too comfy and your students might learn the wrong lessons if you let them participate as trump or musk.

Personally I sometimes wonder if the truth is hybrid. We’re a simulation and “god” is someone on the outside interacting with our simulation. Might also explain why god seems to be missing nowadays. Maybe he grew up, maybe he got bored, maybe he’s doing exams, maybe our simulation is owned by a company that went out of business and is only running because the electricity is still on and the backup generators still have fuel. Maybe we live in a forgotten universe.

I also sometimes wonder if we live in an educational simulation. Maybe we’re college students learning about the horrors of the 21st century in a fully immersive VR program.

See, here’s an actual reason why this doesn’t work for sequestering carbon. Like, it frustrates me to no end that lemmy, as supposedly environmentally conscious as it is, immediately throws out any man-made attempts at carbon capture and insists that plants are the only solution.

If there’s a real reason why it wouldn’t work, then okay! I get that! Just… We’re already burning up here and we need all the help we can get. We’re already suffering the consequences of climate change and it’s only going to get worse, why is everyone so excited to discount any attempts to improve the capture process? Do you really wanna live with 2023’s weather (or the weather for whatever year we finally start decreasing CO2 output) for however long it takes for the environment to fix itself, or would you rather researchers were trying to find newer, faster ways of capturing it so we don’t have to keep having extreme weather well into the 2060s or later? Even if we switch to all renewables overnight, If you just sit back and let trees do the job, we’ll probably still be experiencing the effects of climate change for the rest of our lives.

I love stingrays and nurse sharks! They’re like little aqua puppies.

Edit: I remember when I was little, I always wanted to know if the aquarium we were going to had stingrays and nurse sharks (and sea urchins too, they always had sea urchins in the petting pools). They were by far my favorite part of the aquariums.

I have no intention of upgrading to windows 11. I do plan on making the jump to Linux when Valve (hopefully) releases the arch-based version of SteamOS.

You also need a pc that has TPM 2.0 enabled. My 3yr old PC doesn’t have that enabled by default and I’m not even sure what that is or if the motherboard supports it (nor do I care, it’s keeping Microsoft from forcefully upgrading me to windows 11).

My understanding is that pumping algae into the ocean is actually a really bad idea. In a barren pond or abandoned quarry? Sure, great place for it. However, iirc, if the algae blooms it’ll suck a lot of oxygen out of the water and I think puts CO2 back into the water (can’t remember if it just sucks up oxygen, or if it does both). That can cause marine life to suffocate and result in mass die-offs.

Okay, then let’s just give up then.

We can’t plant enough plants to fix the problem because the plants will eventually decompose, re-releasing the carbon back into the atmosphere and environment. We need some form of carbon capture if we ever want a chance of restoring the environment to how it was. Even if we quit deforestation and fossil fuels overnight, we’ll still have all that carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, warming our planet.

Quitting fossil fuels isn’t enough to fix the problem, and quite honestly, the amount of cynicism around carbon capture on lemmy reeks of fossil fuel propaganda. If carbon capture doesn’t work then why bother pushing oil and gas companies to invest in carbon capture? Why spend the money when it could be spent on another oil well or transitioning to solar and wind? I know the latter sounds like a good idea, but again even if we switch overnight, the world will still be warming. Why don’t we make them pay for the damage they’ve done and transition to solar and wind instead of letting them off the hook?

What do you mean? Iirc from the last time I saw this pop up, they wanted to use it as a fuel to heat homes, but it seems like they could just put it back in the ground where it belongs.

Unfortunately, my understanding is that at least part of the blame lies with the labels. Most labels have contracts with their artists that mean the artists make very little, if anything, off studio recordings. That means they make very little from vinyl sales, CD sales, Spotify streams, etc. If you wanna actually support an artist, you buy merch and go to live shows. My understanding is that this is how it’s always been and people are barking up the wrong tree. People are bitching about Spotify when they should be bitching about labels taking a massive chunk of their money. They’ve only become aware of how much money they’re missing out on because Spotify supposedly makes so little that they get sticker shock when they get their royalty check, but it’s really not entirely Spotify’s fault.

That’s not saying Spotify is blameless; but if Spotify’s hands are covered in shit, then the labels’ hands are covered in diarrhea and vomit.
