Talk about creating a problem that way they can sell you the solution, they completely treat it as if they weren’t the original cause of having everyone have to buy new systems for the next windows in the first place.
Not super obscure, but not many talk about it. Q4OS, I love it, a perfect windows replacement down to even imitating the old style windows installer. Plus it’s Debian based so it has a lot of support. I plan on moving my grandparents to it when windows 10 gets fully discontinued as their current rig doesn’t support 11
I’ll never go LG for OLED, they are suspectible to massive burn in. We had an OLED display at work, it had a moving picture that had a mostly static bottom bar, after awhile when you turned it off you could see the burn in spot and it was basically junk when the source was changed to not have the bar cause the burn in was still there.
I swear if this becomes mainstream I’m going back to ancient keyboards again. That’s rediculous lol I am already annoyed at the volume buttons they have on my keyboard and that is not in the way.
I get the point of the meme, but can I just say I hate routers that give you a default password other than admin or password. Like I get the point of it is to prevent the device from being insecure when the user doesn’t put a password on it. However after a while the back of the router becomes basically unreadable and when you go online and search default admin password for x and their support page says that the password is different per router it’s a little ridiculous. It is a much better approach to just force the password to be changed when you do the initial setup that way you can forget the admin password and factory reset it and still be able to access it where with current day routers if you reset it and you don’t have that little piece of plastic on the back that says the admin password you’re more or less SOL
It pisses me off when companies do that. My work’s the same exact freaking way. The bottom level employees can’t accept any type of gifts because it could be seen as accepting a bribe, however you can watch management level go out with a vested interest and have that interest pay for the lunch has incentive to accept their contract or the other way around management level will pay for the interest lunch in hopes to gain favor for them. It’s sickening

Honestly if I could go back and just not do college at all I would. I regret going, we are heading into a world that unless you have experience in the field the title is worthless anyway, and more and more companies are dropping education requirements. All I see is the wasted money which is approximately now at 30-40k now. It’s essentially a piece of paper that is worthless it seems
Yes they do, however in the case of the issue with the third-party dock that was not properly made, it’s fairly easy to see that that was what caused the issue which would be allowed to void the warrenty. At least in the US, not sure how the EU would be since they have a stricter consumer rights system
Honestly they should just specify the project as a public works project, would give them eminent domain rights and skip the whole 9 yards of land pricing. It would force it to be done based off fair market price instead of the inflated BS all land is currently at. Least if I understand eminent domain right.

imo At this point it’s this is no better than just using the same address for everything. The entire point is to be careful about sharing your email address because company is can use it to track you and see what you’re looking at but if you’re just going to use everything under the same email anyway then the tracking still exists you just don’t see the spam for it

before I read the article, I wholeheartedly disagree with the title.
Self-Hosting not only brings control back into your own hands, but also hones your skills at the same time.
OK so after reading I do agree partially with the regulation aspect, but from a privacy POV all of that is fixed by just not storing PII, I run multiple services in my stack, and the most info I collect on someone is their email, which they defo could just opt out of which I would delete off the system.
As for the cost and labor. It’s really not that difficult, my stack consists of Game servers (a mix of them primarily survival based like ark), email hosting for myself and some friends + no reply services for other internal services, my media stack, my file server, the firewall, a reverse proxy manager and my own programming projects/sites. Honestly the hardest part was the networking aspect of it, learning how to use proxmox was a trip because I hadn’t used a containerized environment before outside of docker.
I think this articles being disingenuous with the no paycheck, there is more to Value than a paycheck. With self hosting receiving myself money, while I may not be being paid for it, if I were to put my current setup on to remote hosting I would probably be paying roughly $150 to $200 a month for a private VPS this system allowed me to just spend $700 as a one-off and then minor maintenance costs if something failed, Which free project that I can tend to keep going, is far less than if I were to rely on some other type of service.
As for the ideology of decentralization, yes there is some issues in regards to reliability, obviously these smaller side projects for self hosting aren’t going to have the redundancies that the “proper” hosting is going to have. Like for example just last night my service went down because I lost power for about an hour and a half and my battery standby only had enough power for about 45 minutes of it. Being as most of my stuff is more personal based I’m not too concerned about the downtime but I could definitely see if it was a large scale project like a lemmy server it would be a little more distasteful.
