  • CarPlay (and Android Auto) are designed to only interact with the InCar Entertainment hardware as a display, HID input and limited ancillary hardware. It pushes Video to the display and pulls GPS data, Voice, touch and button inputs. Apple actually dictate that the ICE system cannot store any data except connectivity (Bluetooth connection keys), everything else stays on device.

I am not going to go as far as say that OEM and aftermarket ICE aren’t able to extract information through CarPlay, and I will acknowledge that they will try to get user data through their own interfaces for the benefit of their own interfaces. I would never trust an OEM that forces users to not use CarPlay or Android Auto (ehem, GM).

I am confident that the only reason GM are introducing their ICE platform (codenamed “Edsel”) and blocking CarPlay and Android Auto is because they believe they will be able to profit from selling user information to data brokers. I am also confident that Edsel will be just as disastrous for GM as its namesake was for Ford.

  • You have “done your own research”. It would be interesting to see your list of unverified anecdotes.

My list of unverified anecdotes shows that Apple have engineered privacy into the core of all their systems, almost to a fault.

If you don’t have backups of your data and have not disabled their default security features, you have no chance of restoring your data in the case of device failure. If you die and don’t give permission for your loved ones to access your data, that data is lost.

  • You are correct, but it is also the most recognisable In Car Entertainment interface. If they used a stock photo of Android Auto, it would not be recognised. If they used a stock photo of MBUX or BMW iDrive or any of the hundreds of In Car Entertainment interfaces, they wouldn’t be recognised either.

Also, Apple-bashing is the most effective clickbait, especially when it comes to violating privacy. By inferring that CarPlay was responsible for exploiting privacy, it attracts Apple Apologists, Android Apologists, both ignorant and educated technologists and the general public, especially after the amount of effort Apple put into protecting user privacy.

  • People are still subscribed to Netflix, even though the price keeps going up, even if they don’t watch it. People still have multiscreen subscriptions, even if only one person ever watches it. People still pay their monthly fee for a cable subscription.

I upgraded to a Family subscription so I could watch my YouTube without Ads and I could watch YouTube with my brother without Ads and it was only a few dollars more.

If Google increased the price gradually, a dollar at a time, I would probably not have noticed, like the mythical frog in the cookpot. The fact that they increased the price and clamped down on Ad Blockers at the same time bought media attention to the price rise.

  • When we are paying that same amount for Netflix and/or Disney+ and/or whatever other streaming service and all the content is shit, paying for YouTube Premium was pretty good value.

There is a market of niche video content that is not ever going to be fulfilled by the Mainstream streaming companies, content creators need to be able to fund their content creation and I fucking hate Ads.

If I can pay a small amount to avoid the Ads, don’t have to participate in the arms race of Ad Blockers and still know that the content creators are getting paid I will be happy to pay.

Unfortunately, Google has increased that pittance progressively over time and have now increased it dramatically. They have also introduced a payment platform to try and muscle out Patreon. This suggests that the money from my subscription is not getting the the creators.

I can’t pay a small amount to avoid ads any more. Content creators are not getting paid, and I am being forced to either not get the content any more or start investigating Ad Blockers.

  • As plenty of other people have already said, if YouTube Premium went up by a pittance every month (boiling frog price increases) I would probably keep subscribing. The fact that they A) clamped down on AdBlockers and B) increased Premium rates is a major disappointment.

Add to this that Patreon are introducing invasive User Agreements and it is getting more difficult to support Independent content creators.

Platforms like Curiosity Stream are looking more and more appealing to those of us who want interesting content and don’t mind parting with a reasonable amount of cash to support creators.

  • I will quite happily pay a reasonable price for the privilege of avoiding ads.

I understand why people block ads, even though they are a a free tier, even if I don’t agree with it.

The fact that the cost of YouTube Premium almost doubled overnight is making me rethink my ethics, when my current subscription is up for renewal, I will be reassessing whether to cease watching YouTube, watch YouTube with ads or determine another way of supporting content creators.

  • Let us analyse it critically;

    • change of API policies resulted in death of third-party apps.
    • exodus of content creators due to inaccessibility of official Apps and user interfaces.
    • exodus of high-value users due to lack of high-value content.
    • exodus of medium-value users due to increase is low-value content and ads.
    • increase in toxic behaviour due to lack of moderation and encouragement of antisocial behaviour.
    • fediverse (and Reddit) attracting content creators and users with better (more insular) communities and content.
    • loss of brand equity with bizarre name change.

I’m honesty surprised that it only tanked by 56%.

    Also, pay attention, u/spez!
