  • I think that most people on earth are good people, still. Most of them are not invading countries and hurting others, they are just trying to live their lifes and help others. Some of the people that commited the horrible acts are misguided or have been hurt themselves to the point of madness. Which does not make it okay. Far from it. They are dangerous and should be stopped. But it also does not make them purely evil.

No human should be viewed as an animal, even if they have done the most atrocious things, which Hamas has. This is not to reduce or deny the severity of what they and the Russian government has done or to deny the suffering they have caused. Not at all.

But they are the ones viewing other as less than human, as animals. This is what makes them able to hurt others like this. And while it is very understandable that our own pain and empathy with those that are hurt makes us want to view them as animals, so we can hurt them back, I do not think it is the way to go. I think it is far more powerful to stop them while keeping our humanity. The more we do that, the more we show that we cannot be broken by them, no matter what they do.

  • I completely agree with you. Dignity and respect is the basis of a strong community. In that sense having good mods is very important. They should help to ensure this (and of course, not make matters worse like in your case). Users should feel responsible as well, to not just downvote, but say something about it. Peer pressure usually is quite a good way to keep certain behaviours in check.

A while ago, I commented on a post with a meme about overweight people, which was disrespectful in my opinion. I said something about the role of eating disorders and societal pressure to lose weight in the development of obesity. So, of course, I was immediately called a fatty, etc by some people and downvoted. However, I was very happy to see that the mods removed these comments and left the ones that were respectful (whether they agreed or disagreed). After a while, I also got upvoted by as many people as had downvoted me. Whether I am being upvoted or downvoted does not matter that much to me personally, but it does say something about the apparent controversity of what I said. I think by good moderation, it was possible to handle this discussion respectfully, even though some people were not able to behave. So, it is a good example, I think.

I think that at Lemmy there are some similar issues with mods and people being disrespectful as we had with Reddit. However, by impression is that it is not as bad as with Reddit, where you seemed to have a lot more negative group behaviour. But maybe I just got lucky up until now. I think at any social platform like this, some people are going to misbehave. Some people just want to take out their agression and it is much easier to do so if you do not have to look the person you are hurting in the eye. So, the response to that is very important, I think.

  • I think from a technological point of view, feddit.nl is fine the way it is right now for me. I do think that there could be more content and it would be nice if more people joined.

I know I probably could post more myself. I have always been a lurker on Reddit and I almost never posted and only rarely commented. I try to do that more now to help grow the community, but it does not come naturally to me. I always feel very awkward when I said something. 😅

I am not sure whether there is a technological solution to grow the community. I think the issue is more social. People might not know about it and I suspect this is a typical case of the bootstrapping problem in ICT (i.e., the technology becomes only attractive to people when a certain number of other users use it as well). In that case, it would help if we inform others about the existence of feddit.nl and we should encourage people to post and comment.

Maybe it would be nice to get a list of ideas on things we can do that people might find more engaging. Maybe some of us would like to have daily discussion threads about an interesting peoposition, or maybe some people would like more memes or something like a weekly thread asking people how they are doing. I think in general, at this stage, it might be nice to have some daily or weekly stuff like this so that people know that there is something to interact with regularly. It might also make people feel more connected or part of the community in this way. It might be best to ask the community about that, because my preferences might de different from others.
