knowing the still lotion to the world’s problems
Autocorrect for “solution”?
In case you can’t tell, I’m passionate about rationality and critical thinking.
However, I still appreciate a freshly-baked π.

The scariest thing is that even if Musk or Trump were to film and upload themselves ritualistically murdering kittens, their followers would call it fake AI. There’d be nothing anyone could do or say to convince them otherwise, short of them witnessing the slaughter in-person with their own eyes (and even that might not do it.)
There’s no way that the release of so much generative AI last year, just before this election, was a coincidence. Fascists got this shiny new tool for denying reality, and now they’re free to dismiss photos and videos without question or repercussion.
I see what you’re saying, but you’re preaching to the choir.
My first love fell down that hole. Toward the end of our relationship (he was about 18 years old) he’d started crushing on another girl. When we broke up, they got together. Each of them was a black hole of negativity. I saw what was happening, but with my status as “ex” I knew there wasn’t anything I could say or do about it.
She was even more of a downer than he was, which was shocking (his constant negativity was part of what led to our break up in the first place.) They spent five years together, ranting and raving about how horrible everything is, all while living with their respective parents and avoiding getting jobs. He stuck with her, even after they realized they had absolutely incompatible sex drives (she was ace, he was very much not. To clarify - being ace isn’t a bad thing. But for him, a complete lack of sex added to his feelings of isolation and distress.)
They eventually broke up, and we started chatting again (she didn’t let him talk to me during their relationship.) He eventually went on adventures across the country, learned his love of kink play from a fling with an experienced domme, went to school and gained skills in a field he loves. He’s in his 30s now, still upset about the state of the world (obviously), but he’s learned to accept what he can’t control.
In the end, he’s expressed a lot of regret over that relationship. He realized in retrospect how toxic it was and how much it was holding him back. I have no idea how that ex-girlfriend is doing these days, but I’m glad that at least he was able to break himself out of that spiral.
The invisible man is upset because his hot bar crush doesn’t know he exists (how could she, the dude’s invisible)
I missed it the first time too, but that isn’t what he’s saying. She probably doesn’t even know I don’t exist. It’s got a double-negative. If you cancel them out, you get: “She probably doesn’t even know(s) I don’t exist.”
The kid’s been breaking the windows one-by-one with a paddle ball.
The combination of the headline and the thumbnail suggested something far more hardcore was about to happen.
And then there are the rest of us. Not quite young anymore, but we were robbed of the chance to even have anything to anchor us down. We’ve been squeezed out of the housing market nearly our entire adult lives. We never could justify having a child, perhaps because of money, perhaps because our consciences wouldn’t let us, perhaps because of both. We job-hop every few years already, as it’s the only way we’ve ever received a sizable pay raise.
There is no house, no child, and no job for us to worry about losing. I don’t know about y’all, but I’ve been doing little more than fighting to get by for far too long.
I’m ready to fight for something else.
Washing machine cat go brrrr?
before we enter the twilight of American democracy.
Twilight already started. Look around at the anti-woke crowd, urging us to go back to sleep. Shhh, calm now, strong daddy government will totally keep us safe. If you think you hear anything scary going on, don’t worry - you’re just imagining it.
Don’t go so easy on him. He lies when his fingers move, too.
Ah, I see someone has been to Hilbert’s Grand Hotel.
Isn’t .world the most populous instance? Hmm…
This is interesting. I get the impression that some admin/mods truly don’t understand how the Fediverse operates. They ban one (or a few) instance name(s), but there are so many more that they might not even recognize as Lemmy links, which get past the radar.
At the same time, there are fears here that .world could become disproportionately powerful compared to other instances, due to its high user count.
So in a way, Reddit blocking traffic to .world while permitting links to other instances can benefit us all. Smaller instances gain users, which is an important step toward balancing things out and keeping any one instance from becoming too powerful. Thanks, Reddit!
(I recognize the irony of saying this while having a .world account. I wasn’t aware of its standing in Lemmy when I made it. I am also still learning the Fediverse myself and don’t know how to transfer my account to another instance yet.)
You may be a leader and you may be Jewish, but I interpreted that comment to specifically mean the people in power who maintain this connection. That is, “you guys” sounds like an appeal to the Jewish leaders referenced in the article, the US leaders that support the ADL, or both.
I might be wrong, I don’t know OP or what they truly believe. If there is context I’m missing that changes the message, I will stand corrected.
Oh hey, we had someone handing out hand warmers too! She saw me and my girlfriend trading one pair of gloves between us and asked if we wanted a warmer. It was a sweet gesture, the kind of look-out-for-your-neighbor thing we were all there for.
I went to my local capitol protest today and it went peacefully. I was prepared for (and very much expecting) escalation. I wrote the ACLU phone number on my leg, left my phone at my girlfriend’s house, and carried pepper spray in my pocket. My gf and I (and a number of other people) wore medical masks. We also brought clear, full-face shields in our bag too, just in case.
The capitol and the police station were near each other; lots of cops drove by our crowd, but thankfully that’s the only interaction we had with them. But a lot of drivers, bicyclists, and other passers-by made noise in solidarity.
I should also probably note that I live in a blue state. I haven’t heard yet about the experience in red and purple states, but hopefully people will be sharing their stories soon.
One last thing - I’m glad you made the note about phones. Apparently some of the people at the protest reasoned, “I might get arrested, therefore I should bring my phone.” Then they were confused when I used the exact same reason to justify me not bringing my phone. Do people not realize that the police seizes a person’s belongings when they arrest them? Considering the way this administration is going, I wouldn’t be surprised if they rewrote the law to allow police to break into phones without a warrant. At the very least, they certainly won’t stop cops who do it unlawfully.
Lucky me, my company just did an audit of my hours from last month and decided I didn’t work enough to qualify for health care.
I guess I got nothing to lose in that regard.
For themselves. They only care about what will impact themselves. If the power grid got cut in the poorer parts of town, but their own power stayed on, most rich people wouldn’t give a damn. Just like with lead water pipes, or budget-starved public schools, or the myriad of other issues that impact millions of non-rich people, they will let this shit happen for as long as they’re not affected by it. No benevolent rich people are going to come out of the woodwork to save us.
Wait, did the topic of the conversation change? Because China absolutely does not have more women than men.
