Manjaro LXQT, on a Lenovo P70 that’s starting to show its age. They just work.

It’s basically the same headset hardware that I would’ve used in 2008 or so, tbh. Sound quality isn’t perfect but I am not an audiophile. They work equally well for music from my phone while driving since they’re one ear only.

My docker usage is mostly testing and validation that when I run the code on the actual hardware, it will work as expected. I tend to want the container to match the target environment.

If the company isn’t viable without squeezing unacceptable amounts of work out of individuals, it’s not viable full stop.

I can think of only one concrete example where the lead dev walked away - rightfully IIRC - and the community was able to pick it up, fork it, and actually maintain and continue to develop new features.

Sadly, that’s not often the case.

I pay for (via employer) long term disability coverage because it’s cheap, and because my odds of needing it are marginally higher than average.

But in reality, I buy the coverage because I hear the horror stories of people trying to get disability, backlogs, denials, etc.

For me, the fear is not being able to work / work full time, and how the hell would I live while waiting the process out? Could I reduce costs enough to live on SSDI? Probably. But I can’t reduce costs to zero while the process drags out.

As ever, we underfund programs so they do t work properly and then try to cut more funding because they don’t work properly.

For my use cases at workstation level, Manjaro makes it really easy to work with whatever tooling I need - but I’m comfortable on CLI and aware of the risks/benefits.

Wouldn’t suggest it to a noob, ofc, but for me it’s a good middle ground where I can get things done, and also easily work with edge cases.

Not that I can’t build whatever I need to in the deb world, but I prefer to work with instead of against a distro’s packaging.

How high is the consumption of the devices? Probably better to invest in multiple powered hubs for this use case. Not that it couldn’t work, but you’re certainly increasing the odds of intermittent and damned difficult to troubleshoot problems by doing it as you described.

My official work machine is eventually going to get forced to 11. But thanks to corporate America being relatively slow to respond (thanks, leadership!), that will be sometime in 2024Q4 or later.

Everything else, including the machines I use to get most of my work actually done, is non-MS.

That holds pretty true no matter your industry - and if you can identify the actual thought leaders in adjacent biz areas, so much the better.

Read. As much as possible. And then think about it, find the takeaways. The takeaways will be crap at first, but will improve rapidly.

Know your limits, but also know your cheat codes. Use the latter to gain admission to progressively more challenging circles.

There is no one on earth, and no series of events, from whom/which you cannot learn something. It might not be life changing, but it’s still worth searching for the worthwhile content.

You’re absolutely entitled to enjoy work, particularly when it has outcomes that you value. That strikes me more as human nature than anything capitalism-specific, and something that more people should have the freedom to seek.
