  • Look… Um… Don’t take this the wrong way because global warming is serious shit… and the fascism trend is super scary… But don’t think you’re the only generation that has a scary world outlook. You got to live your life. You’ve got to get the most out of this world that you can. As hard as it is to believe, things are better now than they ever have been in the history of time. Unarguably.

There are many things to be unhappy about, there are many things that we should fight to change, but it’s self-defeating to only see the negative and to be this cynical. You have to see life as it is and enjoy the positives, savior the positives, Go out where the weather is good, find a special person and bask in their company, And yes, start a family with them. Create a pocket of goodness in your little slice of the world… Keep the rest of the shit out. Create memories and love and laughter and joy where you can. This is the way it’s been done since forever.

  • Look that’s nice and all, but it’s not going away and it’s only going to get worse. The age of fake AI porn is only beginning. Full-on porn videos where you can take a couple of photos of someone and the AI will build a model of the person and insert them into the porn video is coming. Whether this is done for laughs, from embarrassment, or because it’s sexy doesn’t matter.

This genie is not going back in the bottle. This is only the tip of the iceberg. We are moving towards an age where you will be able to have virtual sex with anyone you want as long as you have a picture or video of them. VR sex and a porn game that can map someone into a character isn’t that far away. It really doesn’t harm anyone if we quit being such prudes.

  • Every company you’ve ever worked for has enough work for a full time graphic designer? I’ve worked at some bigger companies that had someone for that role, but mostly no, the companies don’t have people for small tasks that don’t come up too often. That means people have to move out of their lane and do some additional work. That’s a lot of what working at a smaller company is all about. You wear many hats and many of them you learn on the job. Engineers tend to be near the top of the food chain in terms of figuring stuff like that so they get those tasks sometimes.

This life in a small company. How has this never been something you’ve had to deal with?

  • I’m with you. The company is paying you for your time and if learning a new task is what you’re getting paid for, great. If they “punish” you for it, for example “now you have to stay late and finish your other work” or you get dinged for not meeting your regular metrics, then they’re full of shit. But if the request is simply please take care of this thing because we don’t have an expert to can, then you just do it. I don’t get what the issue is. It’s interesting new stuff you get to learn.

However to be honest, I am in management and I manage a team of engineers, and I expect to them to be flexible individuals. Sometimes they’re doing technical drawings, sometimes new development, sometimes assembling prototypes with tweezers, sometimes they’re learning new software, and sometimes they have to create renders for customer presentations. If any of them gave me shit about “not my responsibility” I’d be pretty pissed off because IMHO an engineer needs to be a flexible individual especially in a small company.

  • Um… that’s not quite right. Here’s the thing, if you earn $100k and invest it in pre-tax (401k) or post-tax (Roth), and you pay the same tax rate throughout, then with both investment strategies you will end up with EXACTLY the same amount of money. The only benefit of a Roth is if you assume you have a higher tax rate in the future when you want to pull it out. If your tax rate is the same both now and in the future, then Roth and 401k are equivalent investment vehicles. If you don’t believe me, do the math yourself.

Slightly more detail. The reason this is true is that return on your investment and the tax are both percentages of your base investment and the math doesn’t care which order you multiply one versus the other. So let’s say you make a 500% return on your investment and the tax rate is 30%

    $100k * (0.7 tax rate) * (5 ROI) = $350k Tax first Roth

    $100k * (5 ROI) * (0.7 tax rate) = $350k Tax after 401k

    So the take-aways are:

401k wins if you have company matching. ALWAYS invest at least up to company matching because that’s free money.

Roth wins if your tax rate in the future is higher than now. (this is not necessarily a good bet because your tax rate will probably be lower once you’re retired.)

  • The simple reason is that it depends on what in the floor can’t actually handle the 2000 lbs. If it’s a floor 1’x1’ floor tile that will break, then Elon is right. If the loade limit is a beam that spans a larger distance, then he’s totally wrong.

In places like a server room, you typically have a raised floor that supports tiles in the neighborhood of 1.5’-3 feet square. (The raised floor allows for all the cabling and air con to be run around the systems.) If you say that the floor can’t support more than 2000lbs that typically means they can’t guarantee enough of a safety margin and you run the risk of the object breaking through the floor. Musk’s wheel argument is crap unless he can be sure each wheel is not on the same floor support area. (Which obviously he can’t.)

However floors the spec will typically have some safety margin and that probably kept him from going through the floor. His logic, while not 100% wrong in the basic statement, lacked a deeper understanding of what was going on and certainly doesn’t help the idea that he’s a Tony Stark genius. It was a Dunning-Kruger level dumb statement to make.

If this statement was made in isolation I would give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he realized it was a stupid statement once he said it but he just didn’t bother to correct himself. However he’s made so many dumb and arrogant statements over the past few years, I assume it was just a dumb unsophisticated statement from someone who isn’t that bright.
