It’s not bullshit. When I lived in Edmonton, we had a mountain ash tree in our front yard, as did many others along our street. In the winter, the birds would hop from tree to tree, eating the fermented berries, getting more and more blitzed with each bar tree they visited.

But you’re right about the resistance. Also, most extension cords are undersized for the loads they pull, they’re commonly made with 16 or even 18awg wire, further increasing resistance (which translates to heat).

Also can I go to Canada buy a cabin or house with a plot of land and not work? Unless I just needed some walking around money?English11·8 months agoDo you think you can produce enough food in a 3 month growing season to keep you fed and healthy all year long? Do you already have a full set of proper winter clothes that are warm enough to make it through a Canadian Winter? Do you have a vehicle that has a block heater installed in it already, and winter tires for it? How are you going to pay for gas, and heat your house? And pay for electricity? And you may want to consider pot plant selling as a hobby instead of a main income source, since everyone grows their own already.

Also can I go to Canada buy a cabin or house with a plot of land and not work? Unless I just needed some walking around money?English11·8 months agoThe problem isn’t housing though, it’s the cost of living. EVERYTHING is more expensive in Canada, since almost everything is imported. Since the growing season is only about 3-4 months maybe (except for parts of BC), almost all food is imported (usually from the US, and as soon as those tariffs hit, the already-high prices are going to skyrocket). Clothing (of which you need double, since winter), books, school supplies, electronics, tires for your car (again, two sets), just every-fucking-thing is imported and expensive.
Housing costs are the least of your problems.

The chucks seem kinda cheap too, but honestly that’s not enough for me to switch teams, I’m married to Milwaukee, and the divorce would just be too damn expensive at this point.

clockwork_octopus@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do we have an internal monologue?English7·2 years agoIt seems to me that you’re attempting to equate an internal monologue with intelligence, and I don’t think that’s a fair assumption. An internal monologue is just a brains way of formatting its thoughts and feelings about the information that flows in. There are many ways to do this, and one way isn’t necessarily “superior” to another. That’s just how brains work. And while many intelligent people do have this internal monologue, it’s absolutely not necessary for intelligence.
Side note, one of the most brilliant people I’ve ever met is aphasiac, and doesn’t have an internal monologue.
clockwork_octopus@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•[Answered] Do "chest pillows" hurt for women to do?English2·2 years agoUsually that doesn’t hurt, but that doesn’t mean that it never hurts. Really it depends on how sensitive they are, or if there are underlying issues (like cysts deep inside the tissue, maybe) that would make pressure on them very uncomfortable, or downright painful.
clockwork_octopus@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•While everyone is watching the world stage and some are predicting WWIII, isn't there a good chance that the USA is getting close to some kind of civil war?English122·2 years agoUh, lots and lots of people are hungry, lack shelter and jobs. Almost 600,000 people in the US right now are unhoused, and one in eight homes are food insecure (roughly 44 million). The only area where the US is doing good right now is the unemployment rate, which is currently sitting at an ideal 3.7%.
As for causes of civil war, economic inequality plays a large role, as does political deprivation, both of which are rampant (you can thank late-stage capitalism for the first, and the far-right for the second). There are other factors at play, of course, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility for the US to go there.
clockwork_octopus@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it automatically & inherently anti-semitic to criticise an individual Jewish person for something unrelated to their Jewish heritage?English81·2 years agoNo, in the same way that it’s not sexist to criticize a person for something unrelated to their gender, and it’s not racist to criticize someone for something unrelated to their “race” or ethnicity.
I think the person in your example is being an asshole, and they clearly don’t understand the definitions of antisemitism or misogyny. Assholes are everywhere, in every country, culture, and religion. Nowhere is exempt. Which is a shame, because people everywhere are deserving of dignity and respect.
Except for assholes.
