Gotta say, the original Newton logo would’ve looked sick if engraved on the back of a product. Too bad nobody has ever done it.

Yeah. It’s kind of like being an actor vs just enjoying watching movies.
Watch porn, or make porn? I know a few friends who would find latter attractive. Not so much the former.
I did exactly that many years ago. Ditched my phone and went with x86 UMPC with builtin 3G modem, the name of which I don’t remember because it was some random Chinese no-name. Unfortunately that experiment coincided with the era of “fuck websites, we’re going app-only because we’re so hip”. I was in a world of pain right off the bat when I got a carrier plan, specifically marketed for usage on PC’s, and it did not work. I called them and they said to me:
Turns out, the usage on PC’s meant tethering…
Lots of online things, if they were even available as websites, were highly cut down versions of apps. And SMS 2FA, goddamn. I remember not being able to buy booze and shoes because, apparently, phone confirmations were required in those establishments. Good thing they’re fading out in favor of TOTP and passkeys. But, at a time, I had to swtich to a carrier that allowed me to use “corporate” features like SMS forwarding and SIP telephony. Also, fuck WhatsApp, that shit can burn in all fires of hell.
On the other hand, I really miss that time. It was liberating, just not having like, a few dozen malwares in my pocket tracking me down just to track someone’s dog, or a bus, or to spy on someone’s buying preferences or whatever. But things have gotten quite a bet better over the years, so I’m kind of inclined to repeat the experiment with my new-ish OM3S which I carry because I still cannot imagine going out without a proper PC on me (don’t buy it, though, it is severely underpowered, better get something GPD instead).
Skyscrapers, most likely.
I used to live in a resort city for the past year, and really missed big city things, like specialty stores - for the whole city there was only one PC store, one bicycle store, one music store - and all of them sucked big time. So I had to rely on online marketplaces… oh wait, there were none, so I had to order international and wait for months. Local taxi was also not good, food delivery business practically non-existent. Same for furniture and appliances, instead of home depot and radioshack you’d have to go to bazaars and ask around. But the most important one is opportunities. I was a digital nomad and lived comfortably, but locals, holy hell, I don’t have any idea how they survive with wages this low. Pretty sure some of those construction workers would trade it all away to live as street musicians in SF or NYC, as just surviving there would put them in like worlds top 0.1%, but instead they work for hours on dangerous jobs for what I would’ve spend on a cup of coffee in a local cafe catered to tourists.

Tailscale… is not that good. The underlying wireguard is robust, but tailscale control plane is completely proprietary, as well as their DERP servers that it too often uses completely needlessly. They can also block you off from downloading it, updating, or logging in, if you happen to be in a wrong country.
I’m myself looking for an alternative to it, but having trouble finding something I could share with non tech savvy friends while not being as complex on my end as, say, open/strongswan ais. Any suggestions welcome.
Can’t do that if you play games.
I recently been arguing with some dude about some PUBG mechanics. It took me quite some time to realize that he was playing PUBG mobile, never played the PC version or even knew that it even existed for that matter. For him, PUBG simply meant PUBG mobile. For those people, they don’t even consider using PC for gaming. They might consider console, but PC to them is just more or less a typewriter for school/office tasks.
I suspect that it’s not Linux that is on the rise, but overall PC market that is shrinking. It’s been a trend for quite a while for non-linux people to dump the PC entirely in favor of using just phone.
The desktop/mobile ratio chart aligns with this

No. The arrow function in where eliminates any possibility of using indexes. And how do you propose to deal with logical expressions without resorting to shit like .orWhereNot()
and callback hell? And, most importantly, what about joins?
It’s not. Youtube is full of AI-generated content. Mostly conspiracy bullshit targeted at republicans and other right wingers. But it’s only now when China does it, it makes it to the headlines.
As far as I’m given to understand from folks who are Russian (but got out of Russia) or Ukrainian, this fellow would more be a change from one strongman to another if he replaced Putin
This is the exact thought the majority of anti-Putin crowd had about his political ambitions during his attempt to get elected as Moscow’s mayor in 2013.
Apparently his Livejournal has him saying some nasty stuff he hasn’t repudiated
He did eventually release a controversial statement rebuking his past racist/nationalist remarks. He said he was only hanging around nationalist circles only because it was the only group capable of carrying out a revolution at the time (like Pravy Sektor eventually did in Ukraine). Then he got into some drama with prominent nationalist leaders, and those nationalist leaders got in trouble with the law, so he changed the course to the point that I’d say liverjournal Navalny and youtube Navalny are completely different personalities, as he went much milder there. Though he never did take back his homophobic remarks.
It’s been strangely fascinating watching as western media tries to hold him up as some hope
That’s because he has by far the most followers. The ones within official parties are all corrupt puppets, and the closest not officially registered opponent has spent last few months literally begging the remnants of the Navalny’s team, who did nothing but shit their pants for the last year, to join forces on the next election.
there’s basically minimal hope he’ll be anything close to a (good) Western-style leader and if he gets into power
His main point of his campaign boils down to make things work “right”, by the book, the way they were designed. Primarily, by eliminating corruption, ensuring fair voting and revamping inefficient post-soviet mechanisms in government. I don’t remember him having any particular stances on social issues like religion or abortion etc. It was more about making the government actually democratic and functional, then letting the others push their agendas.
So I suspect if Putin is ever ousted, whoever replaces him (whether this guy or another) will be there because people think he can bring stability, not because the successor will actually be a good leader (from a western perspective).
Exactly the thought of most Putin’s supporters, who were there during the 90’s, or been scared by the images of those by the propaganda machine. But honestly, as someone who grew in the 90’s, I’ll take that over what we got now. Back then people had opportunity, be it a businessman or a criminal mastermind, which kind of sucked if you chose first and encountered the latter, but at least it was possible. Nowadays, there’s not any. There’s only small business and then there’s business effectively controlled by the government, with nothing in between.
Anyway. I find it interesting this guy hasn’t yet been executed. Instead they (supposedly) shuffle him off elsewhere. If you were Putin, why not kill him?
He’s literal Nelson Mandela right now. Killing him would make a lot of people boil with rage and might cause a massive unrest.
If Navalny ever comes to power, I don’t have any particular hope he’ll be a “good” leader
Oh he’d be good. Just not necesarilly aligned with western politics. Like, he would’ve not gone to war with Ukraine because it wouldn’t make sense, but, if for some reason he did, his revamped government might’ve actually beat Ukraine in a week like Putin hoped, as Ukraine still hindered by the same post-soviet problems that Russia has, along with, well, war. And that’s the dangerous part given his past nationalist past. Like, he could’ve went to war Georgia instead as he had particular grudge against them in the past.
Something something http://[2607:f8b0:4004:c09::8a] and http://3627734062 are valid url’s without a dot, and are probably valid for emails too, but I’m too lazy to actually verify that.
I am not a lawyer, but I imagine there’s no way I could register, or get away with if I do register something like “molester daycare” or “pedo toothbrush for kids”… Oh wait, apparently the last one is actually a thing. Well then I guess it’s not, but man that’s an unfortunate brand name
What’s up with all the pedo instances? Why are they creating instances in an open web? Are they dumb or something? It sounds to me that just registering the domain names of some of those could be considered a crime, nevermind openly inviting and hosting CSAM.
I started lurking twitter somewhat regularly only after the reddit meltdown, and I’m already got so used to X that I instinctively type X into the address bar and press enter to go there. The problem is, it takes me to xvideos.com instead…
It’s not the amount of services that’s the problem, the competition is aleays a good thing. It’s exclusives that are the problem. Almost noone is complaining about origin and uplay even thouhh it’s games are available via a launcher launching yet another launcher. But epic? Everyone hates epic precisely because of their exclusive deals taking content off of other platforms. And for streaming, I guess if some of the players worked out some deal to get their hands on exclusives from other platforms, people would stop complaining about it, even if they jack up the prices to ultimately end up with the same amount of revenue.
There’s literally no way they could do that without being sued into ashes.
I have never been on Instagram, only joined last year because apparently doing business over it’s messenger is now a norm. Subscribed to a few of my friends and was terrified. I know them, I know they’re not living like that, but the amount of effort they put into trying to appear more successful than they actually are is astounding. It’s not just showing the good things and hiding the bad ones like people on e.g. facebook do, but spending hours every day into faking it and outdoing each other. Two have actual depression and should seek help ASAP, but on Instagram they are trying to twist it in some kind of brag/motivation/skit to show how better they are than others. This is absolutely unhealthy, and I am now advising everyone to get off it and stay away for the sake of their own mental health.
Definitely, yes. Win8 was unusable on desktops but was pretty good on tablets, win10 sucks on both. But the main thing is that spyware/bloatware explosion happened in win10. Xbox services, onedrive, cortana, that weather thing with msn news, fucking candy crush preinstalls, etc, all came with win10.
