  • Is this just diversifying for the sake of diversifying – to convince people to maintain their subscriptions, or is there something larger at play?

Like the article said, Netflix has been investing in gaming as well. They have a small but decent lineup.

What’s in it for Netflix and YouTube? Can’t imagine there’s much info to collect for ad purposes.

There’s Pixelfed which is a fediverse alternative to Instagram, but I don’t use it currently as I don’t share my photography online as LCP.

Peertube is a YouTube alternative but I’m not using that currently as well.

Other than them, there are other fediverse platforms that are basically Mastodon-like or Lemmy-like.

Things are fairly wonky right now, but I believe with time, effort and funding many if not all of the fediverse’s issues can be resolved.

Which Lemmy communities are you a part of that are currently tiny? I can lend a hand in posting/commenting there and keeping them active.

For Mastodon, you gotta find the hashtags about the things you care about.

For Lemmy, you gotta put in the work to raise the communities you care about. If there are existing communities, post and comment in them. If there isn’t a community about your interest - and if you’re willing - create and maintain them. The people will come.

I’m all in on the fediverse, and want to watch it flourish.

  • I disagree with them.

    1. Emojis do not look the same on all platforms. Let’s take white large square ⬜ for example. Emojipedia shows what that emoji looks like on 26 different vendors. Some are pure white, some are shades are grey, and then there’s Microsoft who in its usual infinite wisdom decided it should be purple. large yellow square 🟨 is a tossup between actually yellow and orange. This issue is also exacerbated with different displays displaying colours differently. Factors such as color accuracy, viewing angle, brightness affect how you perceive colour.

This also extends to face emojis. grinning face with big eyes (Emojipedia link) isn’t that easy to tell apart from grinning eyes (Emojipedia link)

    1. Emoji support depends on your device. I’m on Windows 11 22H2 which recently added support for shaking face 🫨. Problem is, Windows’ emoji picker Win + . (period) doesn’t have it. Trying to login on a friends phone that’s still on iOS 15 or Android 12, before shaking face came out? Enjoy manually copy/pasting the emoji from Emojipedia.

correct horse battery staple on the other hand looks the same on all devices.

  • I don’t know what opinion to form. The openness of Android is constantly abused, but Google seems to be overcorrecting by locking it down more than iOS in certain cases and reducing choices for users to use/customize their device as they like. I can’t backup my damn Minecraft worlds without paying Microsoft $4/month for a server to act as an intermediary, or I have to download an unvetted third-party Minecraft addon. On iOS, the “walled garden”, you can use the Files app or connect to your computer and backup.

Would decoupling Android from Google help Android’s long-term future? Let some non-profit organization with different goals take over? With that said, it’ll be a big challenge for them to figure out licensing, funding, development, etc.

I’m on a Pixel 6a running Android 14. Material You has grown on me. I still dislike gesture navigation. Would love to see more lockscreen customization.
