A full browser that rendered webpages is not an innovation, that’s a result of increased processing power letting them port more browser code over. Pinch to zoom interfacing on a browser might be an innovation, but a web browser on a mobile phone was not innovative, just iterative.

I’m sorry but this is kind of horseshit. Apple has legitimately brought some new polish to areas that hadn’t seen them before, but LMFAO at Apple inventing laptops that don’t have weird keyboards.

Apple had great trackpads with multi finger gesture support before anyone else, their keyboards have been nothing special compared to ThinkPads and business grade laptops that sold for the same price as them. Their difference was marketing and convincing consumers to pay business grade prices for consumer laptops.

Except that since federating is a technical action we can look at, and examine technically, we can all of course see that it gives Meta access to nothing that they couldn’t have scraped publicly.

Like half of the internet (including lemmy’s clients and server applications) run on open source code and infrastructure that Meta built and maintains.

The company obviously cares about making money, as all companies do, but the reality of our world is that most good usable software is written by for-profit corporations, that’s not an argument against using it, that’s an argument to develop other sources for funding software development.

There’s literally no difference from a Lemmy user’s perspective. It does not matter to us whether someone browses Lemmy from Sync (a closed source Lemmy app) or an open source one.

The literal most popular IDE amongst software developers is VS Code that’s built on Electron.

If a headline is phrased as a question, i.e. “Will X takeover the world this month?”, then the answer is always no, because if the answer was yes they would have written “X will takeover the world by the end of the month” which is a much more declarative and attention grabbing headline.

Similarly, if a headline says something “could do X” that means it won’t because if it was going to the reporter would have written that it “will do X”.

The only reason any of those businesses use Microsoft products is because of active directory and exchange. Both of which are legacy products that are being, if not already, phased out.

From an IT perspective it’s active directory and exchange (and lol no they’re not being faced out, there’s nothing better to replace them), but from a business process standpoint it’s because of Outlook and Excel.

There are flat out no SV companies that can claim the same longevity, and only one or two, like Google / Salesforce, that actually enable the rest of the economy in any meaningful way.

SV is a beautiful place and the money that flows into it makes it seem like paradise, but it also deludes everyone there into thinking that they’re vastly smarter and more important than they actually are.

It’s not just PCs and Steam. I can still play my original Xbox games from 20+ years ago on my Series X (they predate Xbox Live, let alone the Xbox Live Store), and I can still play the digital and physical Xbox 360 and Xbox One games that I bought in those eras as well.

Gamers (and legislators), give Sony and Nintendo way too much of a pass for shitting on backwards compatibility.
