@CCMan1701A @startrek I haven’t liked Discovery or Picard, but I’ve *really* enjoyed Strange New Worlds, and Lower Decks has been a surprising delight.

@FaceDeer @startrek Modern Trek has *really* pushed both the opposition to genetic enhancement and the prohibition of sentient AI. I suppose it is kinda in keeping with the “humanism” of the source material, but it seems like a blinkered view of the future. (I contrast it with the similarly post-scarcity Culture novels, where both biological modification and artificial Minds are common.)

@QHC @startrek Ted Danson has done some fabulous work outside of Cheers, but I’m sure that show will be considered his legacy.

@hascat @startrek I always thought replicators worked like transporters, turning energy into various types of matter. That’s what makes them a key to post-scarcity — it appears the Federation has plenty of energy.

@phoenixz @startrek IMHO, Strange New Worlds is the most “Star Trek” show since TNG. It really captures the spirit of the original show.

(I am not a fan of Picard or Discovery, largely because I feel they don’t have the elements I liked about past shows — they are too dark and pessimistic for my tastes.)

@cygnus The earlier books have fantastic, well-thought out space combat scenes, fairly well informed by physics and orbital mechanics.

Everything around those scenes is cringeworthy, and gets much worse as the series goes on. (Honor may be the most Mary Sue character ever.)

@Doug @startrek That scene was pure fan service, and after a decade in the wilderness this fan at least *loved* it.

@Uranium3006 @startrek Arguably the original vision was far less sexist, with a female second in command (which the network quashed). Even having a female as part of the bridge crew was ahead of its time.
