  • Ok. Let’s be real now. Android without Google Play Services is not something that is even remotely useful for 99.99999999% of the Android users that is out there. Furthermore, if one or two of those users are your friends, then Google most likely keeps track of you quite ok anyways.

Nevertheless, good for you managing to avoid all big social media, relevant messaging apps, dating apps, commercial services apps and apps using Google Play Services.

  • In rejecting SpaceX’s appeal, yesterday’s FCC order said the agency’s Wireline Competition Bureau “followed Commission guidance and correctly concluded that Starlink is not reasonably capable of offering the required high-speed, low-latency service throughout the areas where it won auction support.”

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has acknowledged Starlink’s capacity limits several times, saying for example that it will face “a challenge [serving everyone] when we get into the several million user range.”

Isn’t it Starlink that should fix this?

  • I’ve written this in other threads so it will just be a repetition for a lot of you who are following how the story unfolds.

Here in Sweden we don’t have any laws defining “minimum wage” and some laws regulating things like minimum amount of vacation days can be “replaced” in an agreement.

Now, the idea is that the parties of the labour market, employers and employees should deal with these issues because politicians should stay the f*** away from things they know nothing about. The agreement is normally renegotiated by the employer organisations (yes, the employers are also organized here) and employee organisations (unions) every 2-3 years. While signing an collective agreement is not mandatory it is still expected. It’s the norm.

In my experience employers refuse to agree on collective minimums is because they want to be able to do whatever they want with their employees.

  • Tesla, which has revolutionised the electric car market, says its Swedish employees have as good or better terms than those the union is demanding.

Here’s the thing: a collective agreement in Sweden is about the minimums. There is NO upper limit in the agreement. If Musk wants to give the employees 300 days of vacation and 10000 dollars a month, no union in the world would say no to that…

But we all know the reason for Tesla not wanting to sign an agreement is not about them wanting the employees having better terms…

  • You can set the camera to store the pictures as JPEG. I am happy with JPEG for my holiday photos. Just check that you have the best quality setting since JPEG uses lossy compression.

While HEIF is not the doomsday thing some describes it as, it currently is somewhat problematic.

There are for example problems, originating in differences in implementation between different hardware vendors, with 10-bit and HDR.

I replied to a statement about Heif being an Apple image format. It is not.

Furthermore, HEIF is something that most major mobile device vendors support. Some, like Samsung, even sets it as default on some of their devices. So the whole “Apple always supporting not open standards” is just tiresome at this point.

99.999% of all Android users are defacto locked in by Google. Yes, Android might be open but Play services are not. Google works hard to lock in Android users.

At least Apple are open and honest about locking in iOS users.

    No.

It’s a container for image data developed by Moving Picture Experts Group (“MPEG”, try to guess what else they have created).

While there are some compatibility issues between vendors HEIC still offers a greater set of features as compared to fx JFIF (you probably know it as JPEG/JPG.

Apple was one of the early adopters (2017) and (as usual?) the industry has followed. Microsoft wants money for the codec in Windows and that’s probably one of the reasons why it’s not commonly used…yet.

  • Russia has a population is around 140 million… As for now around 300000 Russian soldiers have been wounded or killed. That’s like… 0.2% of the Russian population. With a father, mother, sibling, wife and friends affected with a wounded or killed Russian soldier the percentage of involuntarily negatively affected people would reach beyond 1%.

How big were the wild protests did you say? Did 20% of the population take part in protesting, maybe not because of the innocent people if Ukraina but for the extreme amount of casualties affecting Russian families in this unprovoked aggression? No? Not 20%?

    10%?

    5%?

Maybe we should just conclude that the majority of the Russian people are not willing to sacrifice anything of their own for the sake of justice…

Because that’s where democracy and justice most often starts:

You sacrificing something that benefits you for the rights and/or justice of another person.
