commenter was suggesting that framework allows you to “grow with your budget”
i don’t think this is exactly true in most situations

not rlly wanting to reply to everyone but framework mainboards are price comparable to equivalent entire laptops
i literally want a framework laptop, but selling it to people as a good way to save money isn’t really viable in my opinion
not to be a downer but you could very likely buy a higher performing laptop than even the top framework laptop for less money than even a minimal build
considering that the intended use case is for research, the web is going to be used either way, so it’s better to not have the distraction of a full web browser, which is exactly what “distraction free” is all about
the play services are not installed by default*

I’m majorly blaming these people when Trump wins.
You did not address their main point, which is that there simply isn’t a candidate that has a better, or even comparable, chance of winning.
Approval ratings are also notoriously inaccurate, especially for dems.
*ruin your year
Security is probably the most important, but there are also general chat utility features such as replies and read receipts.
Spotify literally changed the way people listen to music by being popular enough that the general way of listening changed from a purchase, listen forever model. To a listen to anything you want and never not have anything new, way of listening (but you don’t own anything).
A song is no longer worth a purchase of a cd, or dollar at itunes. It’s worth the 3 minutes of listening that it gives you when Spotify recommends it to you.
Obviously I’m biased. And also, yes, there were streaming services before Spotify, but nobody that mattered and with the influence of Spotify.
Pretty sure people have said this for like 10 years
This is exactly what the article said
Know that you’ll probably hate what you try first. Personally I say you shouldn’t use Pop_OS!, but its better than being scared of making a wrong choice. “distrohopping” is a great way to learn.
tldr: just do it
“It’s installed by default and all my friends are on it” - 50% of Americans
They don’t need to worry about the fact that the other half of Americans are not able to comfortably message them, or participate in group chats, because those are people poorer than them that they might not even want to interact with anyways. Some of them might even be not white.
This becomes even more extreme as ages become younger, with around 98% of college age students and younger having iPhones (this is obviously biased to higher income colleges in metropolitian area but the data is still useful). The peer pressure of not having an iPhone is genuinely incredible (trust me, i experience it). I have genuinely had people stop wanting to be friends with me once they learned I had an Android phone.
Apple has a monopoly so powerful that they influence the social circles of almost every grade schooler and college student in America. This is why they don’t want to give it up.
So you chose tencent?
yes this is oversimplified blah blah
Don’t use Raspberry pi.
Oversimplified and in many cases is not good advice. Raspberry Pis are perfectly capable low cost home servers that absolutely sip power and take up little room.
Mini pc’s such as dell optiplex micro’s and intel nucs are also a good consideration.
chromebooks are often well built with good keyboards at prices monumentally lower than comporable laptops, whilst being powerful enough to run linux well
you can quite easily get linux on almost all chromebooks, even arm ones (mrchromebox and postmarketos are references to look into for that) (postmarketos for arm stuff)
I have an hp chromebook g7 that I paid less than 20 dollars for, which has a good keyboard and is performant enough for firefox and typing on swaywm. it’s worth so little and is so light that it can just live in my backpack without worry. it’s also able to be charged from a normal usb c phone charger, supports usb c display output, and has a low power celeron that absolutely sips power
you can get much nicer chromebooks for cheap too if you’re into that, including some with unibody aluminum chassis and high resolution ips displays, all at prices less than even bottom barrel pc laptops
