People don’t show anyone any respect at all any more. Common courtesy is just gone. ‘Doing the right thing’ is lost because it’s assumed you’re not getting something in return or your efforts are for naught. Everyone is self-absorbed and self-righteous. People preach about “empathy” but only practice it for those they feel sorry for.

I’m not a religious person but treating people like I want to be treated is something I try to do every day. Treating people with kindness, putting out positive energy into the world, makes you a better person. I can’t comprehend the hate that so many people walk around with.

The wealth of misinformation and personal opinions in this thread is… it’s just classic.

I’m not getting into how long a copyright should last. I don’t have a meaningful opinion on it.

What it seems people are overlooking (or forgiving?) is that the guy published a book about characters (IP) he doesn’t own. Taking something that doesn’t belong to you is theft.

Whether or not Amazon should option his material is irrelevant if he didn’t get permission to use it in the first place. I mean, fan fiction is one thing. Creative license and educational purposes could be argued. But he published a freaking book!

Do you think Zack Snyder should get to put out a Rebel Moon and call it “Rebel Moon: A Star Wars Story” without getting permission or paying for licensing? Is this the reality this sub believes we live in? If you write a novel and I read it and soon start writing better more successful stories based explicitly on your characters without crediting you or sharing in my profit, how would you feel? Should your work be public domain? Is that what you (collective) feel is best for “the public”?

I don’t really have an opinion on what should happen with the work either. I could see some cases where it would be a major loss for the public to have the work erased. This could be catastrophic for classic literature. For something so new and not having any established cultural significance (as much as you wish it did), I’d go with whatever a judge believes is best under the law. You’re welcome to argue the validity of the law, and I may agree with you, but that’s a different conversation.

There is a new work by an author using someone else’s intellectual property. That’s what’s this is about. That’s how they were sued.

Copyright laws specifically promote new ideas by punishing those who re-use existing ideas.

You can profit from others’ ideas by asking permission and paying a licensing fee. This happens all the time. It’s how business is done every day.

This entire sub is delusional. You believe in things which are untrue. You make things up to justify theft. It’s funny and it’s sad. I really don’t know where you get these irrational theories or how you’d ever justify them in a court.

If you want to live in literal communism, sure, you can establish that any idea anyone expresses belongs to the world. In the world we actually live in, we have laws protecting people’s intellectual property in order for them to generate content and profit from those original ideas. Otherwise, what’s the point of having an idea at all if anyone can make money from it. This further promotes new original ideas that aren’t derivative of existing ones. This is exactly what the OP stated and I agreed with.

Yes, copyright exists to encourage new works - which the author ignored by creating content violating copyright law. Never mind the public, this dude stole from the copyright holders. He’s a pirate and he got caught.

The amount of people in this thread not reading more than the headline is mind numbing.

I was working at this business owner’s home. Smart, genuine, kind guy in his mid-40s with a beautiful “nuclear” family. He said he was going to vote for Trump because his sister in law worked at one his properties and she spoke well of him. That was it. That’s how a seemingly respectable upstanding well-to-do member of the community chose the president of the United States. Or, at worst, that was the reason he felt compelled to tell others.

“Shitty journalism and click-bait headlines” is why my internet consumption has dropped significantly over the past few years. It’s also why I’ll rarely comment on anything before I read the entire article (unless I’m commenting on a comment). Sites like Newsweek (off the top of my head) are full of misinformation and contain only a sentence or two of information relevant to the actual news story. The rest is in support of the writer’s perspective and opinion which is often coming out of left field.

It feels like most of today’s generated content is just about a headline and the shares and comments that that headline can generate. Granted, I could just be handing out in the wrong parts of the internet and have built my own inverse feedback loop.

I’m not so sure you’ve really learned anything here. You claim to have now taken the time to read the article and you learned something yet you’re still supporting the idea that reading original content over reading the comment section is a waste of time.

The ones I find interesting, yes. The ones I choose to comment on, yes, if it’s a top level comment, of course I do.

Whuuut? No… I worry I might miss out on important information by only reading headlines. And, frankly, I worry that the majority of people on “social media” are missing the point of the journalist’s story by only reading the top -often unrelated or diluting- comments. The comment I responded to is a waste of everyone’s time and alters the narrative of both Hutchinson and the author.

These platforms are great for sharing information, especially in topical areas we find interesting. Yet at the same time, it seems they’re making most of us dumber for participating in them. Headlines are often misleading. A lot of media outlets publish content just for the sake of publishing content and getting clicks while only a tenth of an article is really relevant to the story or offers any new valuable insight. This HuffPost article is trash to begin with. It’s click bait and OP is making it even worse. Which is pretty remarkable.

I’d argue that you’d have more time to read more, and would be more well informed, if you spent more time reading the articles instead of the headlines and engaging in the peanut gallery (of course I’m guilty here too).

Honestly, I can’t think of a reason why government should be telling teachers what they should be discussing at all (just like telling mothers how to deal with their health) - other than ensuring that children be given the best opportunities in the real world.
