But discord supports sending messages to people who are offline. It kind of breaks the paradigm if certain features require full synchronous communication. Maybe supporting p2p transfers during a video / voice chat would work though.
One reason we care about this is because we can choose to or to not purchase small fractions of these public companies and become partial owners. This information is useful in making investment decisions.
Most normal users won’t care about any of this because it’ll shake itself out quickly as has happened with Mastodon. But if you do care, join up with a smaller server that plays nice with everybody and enjoy the whole fediverse.

I don’t understand. I love free software more than the average person, but I choose the communities I belong to based on more things than the license of the underlying technology. What else do I need to learn?
Actually yeah. It feels like voice / videos were kind of tacked on. There isn’t a really good web based chat tool that doesn’t require some sign in and configuration. File transfer isn’t like that and people can easily drop links to third party services in any chat.
