Why would you have a 4090 in the non-gaming one? A 2 or 3 generation old laptop used for $150 can idle Linux far below 120W and run most things as fast as a current gen Windows machine. I have my pc and my work laptop both plugged into a huge monitor with 2 buttons to switch input, and ShareMouse to share the same keyboard and mouse. I preferred Synergy, and then the Barrier fork, and then the Input-Leap fork because they are freeware, but they took away local admin and sudo permissions on the work computer, so I needed an alternative that didn’t need elevated privileges and don’t want a hardware KVM switch.

I like your reasoning here and I will keep it in mind if I get sucked into another one of these conversations, since I don’t have a uterus and don’t think I should ever have any say in what people who do, choose to do with them. The only thing I’m uncertain about is:

I’ve always felt the opposite. Maybe I’m just a contrarian or a misanthrope, but deciding to be a parent always seems selfish to me. It may just be my limited experience, but for all their good intentions, even looking past minor character flaws, I’ve never seen a parent raise a child in a truly flourishing environment. It always feels like they’re trying to relive their youth vicariously through their kids and I see so many negative traits and fears reinforced until they become personality flaws. I’ll have to think about this more.

Technically Kelvin is an absolute scale, where there are not “degrees,” just references to “absolute zero” which is supposed to be no vibrational energy, but is not actually zero kinetic energy since there is still zero-point energy. It’s as arbitrarily chosen a reference as any other scale, and for a specific purpose. We used it often when I was in the natural sciences, but it can be just as strange to have to think in terms of adjusting for 273.15K for the misleading “freezing point of water” or 298.15K for STP, another arbitrary standard of measurement. Kelvin is no better than Rankine. And, it’s even more confusing if you think of temperature as an average energy in a system, and have to consider quantum gases with a temperature “below absolute zero.”

Annoyance in the 21st century at cultural relics and colloquial is kind of silly.

When they announced this, it was the last straw for me with Amazon that caused me to finally cancel Prime, which I’ve paid for annually since it was first offered. Things I’ve been complacently shrugging off until now:

• their delivery misses/delays have gotten consistently worse over the past year and a half

• they screwed up my combined music library when they changed Amazon Music, which was working great before the change

• Audible keeps pushing up-sale subscriptions I don’t want, and is inconsistently working with Android Auto now (but was fine until about a year ago)

• Prime Video ads and up-sale “channels”

• book editions (especially textbook editions): they limit the ability to re-sell old editions of textbooks when newer editions are currently in print. Many classes specify old editions because that’s what the curricula and syllabi have built around and the profs can take responsibility for validating the content. This is a serious issue with the number of errors that manage to get past editors for math and science texts, and they publish new editions for cash grabs when no actual new or useful information has been added.

They really don’t have to do much to keep me complacent tbh - just stop breaking things that already work(ish). Find whatever the deliverable requirements were in like 2015 and just return to those.

This, and also after they ousted him, instead of trying to win over some of the more “moderate” Republicans by agreeing to vote for one of the least of the evils and hopefully get some actual work done in the House, they just grinned smugly at every photo op and toed the party line until they got Johnson and then all made shocked Pikachu faces. They’ve made little effort to improve the situation. It’s insane that they get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to slowly tear apart the flawed system instead of trying to fix it.

That doesn’t sound very fun, it’s a phrase I would find hard to turn down on the off-chance it was meant peacefully and deliciously. :(

I suspect they allowed notifications from some application. When I installed 11 I did it with the offline/local account login instead of the Microsoft account and skipped activation with all optional “features” disabled, then on first login immediately installed Firefox as default, and then disabled telemetry, tracking, targeted ads, location settings, updates, Defender, crash reporting, phoning home, and all unused devices and services that are turned on by default that I don’t use. It’s a shame those are the defaults but I have no complaints about Windows performance after that.

But I finally got speedy with i3 keyboard shortcuts and my games all work great on Linux (perfunctory “btw I use Arch”), so now the only use I have for Windows is in VirtualBox to run ShareMouse until I can find a linux <-> macos KVM alternative that doesn’t require sudo on macos (rip input-leap).

I don’t understand this line of reasoning and it doesn’t seem like an obvious assumption to me, but am willing to read more about it in order to understand why I might be wrong. Do you have any recommendations for a detailed legal argument for it? My searching is only coming up with opinion articles and none of them seem solid (for either side).
