Personally I’m way happier with a 401(k) than a pension. Risk is more distributed with a pension, yes, and many people don’t have the knowledge or resolve to properly manage their own retirement funds. But pensions are a royal PITA, way more complicated (and expensive) to manage than a 401k. So if I had to choose between money coming out of my paycheck to go into a complicated expensive pension fund that may or may not be around in a few decades, OR a 401k that I have complete control over and can take with me when I leave the company, I’ll take the 401k every day of the week.

Personally I feel like it’s less about exposure to extreme gore and porn and stuff like that. It’s more about the constant barrage of awful shit happening all over the world. Some stupid thing some politician said, police brutality, an asshole on a plane, etc. Our brains just weren’t designed to handle so much stimulus overload. I’m not a psychologist or whatever but that’s my opinion.

I just told the truth. Personal time off, health and wellness, weight loss, surfing, travel, and yes vibing doing nothing.

It went over well. Most interviewers were more interested in that than my professional experience. Most people can’t do that and want to know what it’s like.

For my part, I don’t want to work for/with people who look down on that sort of thing.

There was a lot of speculation about that but I’m not sure if there’s any consensus. Individual tax returns only show income, and business returns only show book values (not fair market value which would help determine wealth). He had pretty big net operating loss carryovers from previous years which essentially zeroed out his income for a few years, so it’s hard to say. I feel like I remember looking for foreign account disclosures but didn’t see them in the returns, which would be at least one set of FMV numbers to go with. It’s been a while since I looked though. Overall I walked away being disappointed so I’ll stick with my original assessment, maybe I take another look later today though.

The funny thing is, his tax returns were fairly unremarkable. I’m a cpa and my background is largely with high and ultra high net worth individuals and their businesses, so people like trump are my bread and butter. I reviewed his returns when they first leaked and honestly nothing jumped out at me as particularly noteworthy or interesting at all. All I can speculate is that he’s just a stubborn asshole and simply didn’t want to release them.

He should’ve posted them all online. As a cpa with a bit of rare downtime on my hands I’d love to volunteer to review returns for the irs. I know all the errors and omissions, tricks and and gimmicks, goofs, fuckups, whoopsies, you name it. 20% commission for the recovered taxes seems fair compensation.

I read once that maybe Sweden or Norway has publicly available tax returns. BUT, the person whose return you look at gets notified when you view it, so you can’t just go around subtly snooping on your friends and neighbors without being noticed. Idk if that’s true though.

I think the same about all these geriatric politicians. McConnell, pelosi, Biden, Trump, whoever. These are already successful (ish?) people who could be retired living the good life. But instead they stay in the shitshow holding on to power as long as possible. I don’t get it.

I said I miss learning through osmosis, when you hear colleagues talking about something you may have heard of or read about but never seen in real life. So you get hands on practical real life experience on new concepts - or vice versa, teach someone else something new. You know, a healthy exchange of knowledge and ideas to help each other learn and grow. Fuck me, right?

I truly enjoy a good debate “in good faith” where both parties lay out their positions and defend themselves and challenge my views. There’s very little of that here. Just pure unbridled rage and astonishing ignorance.

Some of the people here are downright scary in how toxic and antisocial they are. I just got called a social vampire in another thread for having the audacity to say I personally want to return to office because I miss learning from colleagues, which just doesn’t really happen when everyone is wfh. Yeah it’s really unfortunate and messed up that that is literally the only recourse the workers have. And usually it’s out of the frying pan right into the fire because all companies fucking suck. Corporate culture is so toxic.

Hopefully they get caught in the “is this guy a lunatic” phase of the interview process. If they are functional and otherwise normal and reasonable then who cares if they’ve got an eight ball in their pocket.

Related story: my ex worked at a vet clinic for a while. She said they hired a new vet tech and he got fired on day one. He’d stolen some animal tranquilizers or something and disappeared. They found him passed out in his car drooling. Called the cops/ambulance and fired him on the spot obviously.

Point is, crazies are easy to spot, who cares what otherwise normal well adjusted people do.
