Oh man, it’s a nightmare and I just happened to be lucky. I ended up buying one of those passively cooled router-esque N100 boxes out of China (AliExpress) and while it was a total punt it turned out to be a great experience, and their customer service was actually good too.
Kingdel was the make/vendor and it’s been rock solid.
I moved to an OPNsense router a couple of years ago and I’ve never looked back. Hell is shitty consumer routers.

If you, or others, choose to interpret my use of the words “drill instructor” as “that guy from FMJ [a fiction film about the US army 60 years ago]”, I can see why confusion arises.
Let’s forget about drill instructors - it was an allegory and if the allegory didn’t work to serve the point I’m actually trying to make, let’s say “personal trainer” instead. Why do personal trainers exist? One of the clear reasons is that they help you exceed what you thought possible.
And all I’m saying is that I’ve been working on dev teams where you end up achieving more than you thought you could because there’s some separation between those who dream up features and those who build them.

I’ve been at Gamescom once where we considered backup consoles and HDMI switches in the cable aisle to ensure we could rapidly switch onto a running game when the first instance crashed. Stability improved enough that it wasn’t required in the end but yeah, software for trade shows was always hot as hell.

JdW clearly thought not very much of my thoughts and someone decided the name-calling warranted a removal. That said, I’ve responded to JdW with a direct message to share some examples I’ve been part of in my time. I do believe it’s a pattern you come to recognise after 20+ years in software development.
Software development. I’ve been on both sides of the equation I’m describing above, many times. Looking back, a large part of the achievements I’ve been fortunate to be part of started with someone who said “we can totally do it” while we, the team, were mouthing “how the fuck are we going to do that?!”.
But you find a way, usually. That’s all I’m saying.
In my career, I’ve learnt the hard way that every crowning achievement starts with a bullshitter being cursed by a bunch of engineers - the very same engineers who years later laud the bullshitter as the person with the tenacity to drive them to achieve greatness.

I only backup what I can’t redownload, ie personal media. Everything else would be annoying but probably also a “great filter” if it all got lost and I’d have to make choices about what I really wanted in the first place.

Meta just launched Threads in Europe, citing “compliance concerns” as the reason for the delay. This happens at the same time they announce their first step towards ActivityPub. The brand new Digital Market Act requires big companies to open their dominant platform and Meta wanted to be on the front foot before launching, and then get ready to laugh as Twitter get into regulatory hot water. If you want to run in Europe and be a dominant platform, you HAVE to be open.
In a world set against you, even doing the right thing might not lead to success.
They are deeply dependent on Google; they’ve been trying to find revenue without Google. They’ve largely failed, but that doesn’t mean the strategy is wrong.
Chrome has achieved its utter dominance through its sheer push on Google.com, YouTube and all the high traffic channels they own.
If chrome is unbundled, it’ll have to compete on equal terms with Firefox. It will truly and thoroughly help.
