  • Ah, I see your point.

If we want to be precise, we could say Lemmy is federated.

    There’s centralized, federated,and distributed (e.g. DHTs).

On federated networks like Mastodon, I can send messages to my followers that I’m moving instances; after I finish moving, my followers can refollow me on the new instance.

I can export and import the people I finish and my block lists. I’m not sure if Lemmy has this functionality, but the point is that it’s still better than Reddit. A node daying doesn’t mean the end of the network.

The ideal would be to have a fully distributed version of Lemmy, where people could join virtual instances over a distributed architecture. Perhaps that will be possible one day, but for now Lemmy’s better than nothing.

  • For me the turning point was when a failed Windows forced upgrade ended up deleting me important files. I had backups, but I lost days of work because Microsoft felt so insecure in the face of piracy that they had to upgrade my computer despite me constantly telling them not to do so.

That was around 10 years ago. I went through various KDE distros; in the end I settled for Kubuntu.

The recent developments in KDE plasma are excellent. I haven’t had to open a command prompt in years. I hadn’t had a tech problem until this year when my tmp folder got full.

  • It’s the nazi bar analogy. The moment you allow nazis, they invited that’s friends and then you can’t kick them out because they can cause big trouble. The solution is not to allow nazis in the first place.

And the issue with the “99% of people” argument is, it doesn’t matter what percentage of the population are decent people. If they’re too many, the network effect takes place and the platform becomes too big to fail.

Do you know how many people are dictators in dictatorships? One. The leader. The rest are subjects. But that single leader is enough to make everyone’s lives shitty.

So it doesn’t matter what percentage of Threads/Facebook users are nazis; by being there they support the nazis they can’t kick out.

The decentralized fediverse model isn’t perfect, but defederation has worked so far at keeping nazis at bay. They have their little corner where they can talk all the racist shit they want, but they can’t harm users of instances that have blocked them.

The real question is how much money Zuck plans to invest in moderating hate speech. I can’t be sure how much, but based on the precedents, I can say it’s a pretty small figure. That IS a problem.

  • OF COURSE IT’S DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE. That’s my fucking point.

My issue is with ignorant people who judge everyone based on oversimplified premises.

Sugary snacks mess up your metabolysm. You stop burning fat. Your blood sugar gets imbalanced, you get highs and lows. And when you hit the lows, you feel exhausted and super hungry. And you have no idea what’s messing you up because no matter how much you eat, you still get hungry, so you eat much more than what you ought to because your metabolism is fucked up and your brain gets the wrong signals. You try to cut your fat, but that gets you even more hungry, so you eat more carbs (even diet carbs like oatmeals and such) which then mess your blood sugar even more.

Even if you do exercise, you still end up getting fatter. Drinking diet soda doesn’t fix it and gets you even hungrier.

And while you’re doing the impossible to cut as much fat as you can, you still get fatter, your mood gets explosive, you can’t sleep well, and then people are telling you to eat less and that you’re not putting enough effort. Meanwhile your stomach is in unbearable pain because your hunger is out of control.

Also, you know what messes up hunger? Depression. There’s just so many factors to take into account.

Anyway, you know how I finally broke that vicious circle (after I got my mental health under control)? I cut my carbs. I quit all sugary snacks (even the small ones). I quit all sodas and concentrated fruit juices. Started to consume more animal fat, against the “common knowledge”. Whenever I got hungry, I didn’t eat a snack. I just ate normally. Ham, a hotdog, milk, or even an egg. It wasn’t easy and I woke up at 4AM in the morning all hungry. It was hell for two weeks. But after those two weeks I got better and my system got the balance it needed.

Boom. Lost 5 lbs in one month. I stopped getting tired. I was more energetic. I got better at the job.

But it took me years, literally years to find out it was the damn snacks (which were small enough to appear harmless) and the sodas with HFCS that were the ones at fault.

All these years of failed trial and error just to find out fats were not the enemy. But suuure, it was me eating two burgers instead of one.

I was NOT eating like a fucking pig. I was NOT supersizing my meals. But sure, armchair dietitians on reddit know what’s best for me, right?

It’s ignorant people giving unscientific advice who make life a living hell for the rest of us.

    “Cut the fats”. Yeah, right.

  • . I can put on my big boy pants and block them as I see them, instead of an admin doing collateral damage and preventing

Okay first, you have no fucking idea how online harassment works. I’ve seen numerous cases of people being attacked, even doxxed, hy hordes of assholes. Imagine a single mother who can barely have time to work and attend their children, to deal with this shit. And you know? It happens ALL THE TIME to BIPOC users on the fedi.

“Hey, the nazis are invading Poland, why aren’t you on the frontlines carrying your gun?” As if there wasn no such thing as innocent CIVILIANS. In a world where speaking up is punished by dogpiling, harassing and doxxing, people just prefer to flee because their admins don’t do shit to defend them. Ask ANY Black person on Mastodon what it’s like to be harassed online.

Second, forcing people deal with the problems of harassment puts the burden of blocking on the end user. (From another POV, it’s the e-mail spam problem if you think about it. Dogpiling is a social form of DDOSing someone, and there’s no way to prevent it except by mass blocking the source of the attacks.

Letting an instance admin defederate from a problematic instance protects ALL the admin’s users with minimal effort on their part. If a threads user is defederated they can as well switch to another instance, nobody stops them.

Are they not happy with how their instance is treated? Demand changes to the instance, after all they paid for it, didn’t they? Oh they didn’t? Then who’s finacing and controlling it then?

Consider defederation the invisible hand of the market turned visible.

Defederation is NOT damage. On the other hand, people suffering emotional distress from harassment IS damage.

  • You realize how hard it is to not gain weight in today’s society? Unless you get a good dietitian, it’s hard AF not to get fatter everyday, especially when the media brainwashes everyone into thinking it’s fats and not sugars where the problem lies. And don’t get me started into how HFCS is added to practically EVERYTHING, or how the food pyramid itself is BS and not recommended by health professionals nowadays.

It takes a Tibetan monk with steel willforce and a team of doctors not to consume soda or the occasional snack, and to buy the appropriate food consumption choices to avoid adding to your body weight.

And I’m not even counting heart conditions, workplace limitations, life obligations, the increasing unavailability of healthy foods for the working class, the asinine healthcare design, the toxic conditions of tap water (cough Flint water crisis cough), the pretty much nonexistent health programs in schools, and the utterly lethal suburban design which forces people to spend at least an hour a day behind the wheel to do their daily tasks, and, you know, fucking poverty fucking everywhere.

Personal responsibility is just victim blaming by any other name. Prople who are eager to dismiss obesity as a willforce problem seriously need to touch some grass.
