Scalise is a piece of shit, but Jordan is bigger, more dangerous piece of shit. He has been an enabler and encourager of all of the worst behavior we’re seeing now and over the past few years. I truly hope this fails.

McCarthy got 188 votes in conference and then went thru 15 rounds of voting on the floor to get 30 more votes to be elected speaker.

It will be even more of a challenge for Jordan to get 90+ votes.

He can go to the floor and risk losing on the first ballot. But if he lost on the first ballot, at least he’d know who is opposed to him so he can try to work them over.

From what I’ve heard, the Republicans already know the first vote is going to fail. Their only goal at this point is to avoid the clown fiesta that happened for McCarthy, so I’d expect a long gap between the first failed vote and the second vote as they try and get all their ducks in a row.

Jordan Still Doesn’t Have the Votes

In a second secret vote in the House Republican Conference, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) got just 155 votes from members would said they vote for him on the House floor, with 55 saying they would not.

Jordan is far short of the 217 votes he would need to win the speakership

I’m cynical af, but my take is: never underestimate the “moderate republicans” willingness to bend the knee to the freedom caucus, and Trump.

There are holdouts that say they won’t vote for Jordan, not wanting to “reward bad behavior”. I hope they hold

The GOP should be endlessly taunted for being intentionally dysfunctional at such a critical time. Putin is drinking his best booze watching his principal opponent implode.

Straight theater. No serious republicans want to spend the rest of this election cycle repealing Obamacare 500 times to die in the Senate.

Or worse yet, draw even more attention to how ridiculous the Biden impeachment fiasco has become. All their witnesses testified under oath that they had zero evidence.

Who and how does some group of people find value in a Congress with no clear leader for an extended period of time ?

Who and how does some group of people find value in a US military combined forces with disrupted rank advancement & corroded hierarchy ?

Why is the answer to that repeatedly The GOP ?

This is the best summary I could come up with:

WASHINGTON, Oct 13 (Reuters) - Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday nominated hardliner Jim Jordan for speaker, setting up a vote that will test whether he can surmount the party divisions that led Steve Scalise to abandon his bid.

Representative Elise Stefanik, a member of the chamber’s Republican leadership, said on social media that Jordan had won the closed-door vote, which had pit him against Austin Scott, a Georgia lawmaker who has kept a relatively low profile in his 12 years in Congress.

Without a speaker, the House is at a deadlock as war expands in the Middle East, Russia continues to pound Ukraine and the government faces a Nov. 17 partial shutdown deadline without additional funding from Congress.

Some Republicans have suggested expanding Representative Patrick McHenry’s powers as temporary speaker, which would enable the House to take up aid to Israel and other pressing matters.

Republicans have been hoping to avoid a repeat of the embarrassing spectacle that occurred in January, when hardline conservatives forced McCarthy to endure 15 floor votes over four days before winning the gavel.

While McCarthy was the first speaker in U.S. history ousted by a vote of the chamber, the last two Republicans to hold the job - John Boehner and Paul Ryan - also left under pressure from their right flanks.

The original article contains 586 words, the summary contains 221 words. Saved 62%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!

Sounds like the same story we heard earlier this week. Just replace “Jordan beats Scott” with “Scalise beats Jordan.”

Do we just keep going until they run out of people to nominate?

They could cut to the chase and nominate George Santos. It’s a step down from Galactic Emperor but he might go for it.

Just a reminder: Gym Jordan did NOT vote for the continuing resolution that is the sole reason the US has a semi-functioning government today.

McCarthy did; that racist snake Scalise did. But Gym Jordan did not.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/interactive/2023/house-vote-government-shutdown/

Meaning that when the month or so left on the clock on the current CR runs out in November, this asshole will do everything he can to ensure that no budget is approved and the clock runs out again, turning it all into yet another rancorous, needless, long term government shutdown.

It would be best for all concerned if Gym Jordan were NOT elected Speaker of the House, not to mention third in line for the presidency: Putin would have novichok on doorhandles in DC so fucking fast the world’s head would collectively spin.

But what’s really ironic about the whole thing that if just a handful of Rs came to their senses and Hakeem Jeffries were elected Speaker, Jeffries would do all he could to bring ALL reasonable legislation to the floor, regardless of the originating party. Gym Jordan will just shut it all down – unless it benefits Putin or a big donor, of course.
