One thing I hate about border security compromises is just that it’s never enough for the right to shut up for even a day. The border could be the most secure anywhere outside of the Korean Peninsula and Republicans would still do ignorant stunts and gin up the rubes with sensationalist coverage. You’re just validating their framing.

Democrats know this. But they have been given a chance to capitulate, look like they’re weak and have no plan, and be complicit in cruelty to the marginalized. They can’t resist.

Another issue with the “moderate” viewpoint trying to split the difference.

As Republicans get crazier and crazier, moderates follow them to the right.

It’s why in 2024 the two candidates are both ripping off Ronald Reagan’s campaign slogans from 40 years ago.

So we see high ranking politicians with a D next to their name, ok with policy that the democratic party said was too conservative decades ago.

The bigger problem is if we don’t fund Ukraine, it’s a real possibility that NATO countries are next, and that means we are obligated to send troops, not just guns.

I wouldn’t be willing to say Biden is okay with this, but Republicans hold the purse strings, so to avoid possible global war, Biden definitely has to compromise.

I do fully agree that the current state of the GOP is at least partly Dems’ fault for playing ball with people who will stab you, steal the ball, and say they won fair and square.

The USA isn’t the entire world…

If we can’t fund Ukraine because of Republicans, that sucks, but it’s life. There’s lots of other countries (like the entirety of NATO) that can temporarily pick up the slack.

Giving Ukraine a pittance and 10x that to Israel so they can commit a genocide and re-enacring trump era policies that come damn close to America committing a genocide is not a good trade off.

And shows how exceptionally out of touch dem leadership is.

Which brings us full circle to depressed turnout and a risk of trump winning.

So, I agree with the basic premise, but I doubt it’s that simple. Global alliances are likely complicated, so the US failing to fund Ukraine emboldens countries like China, Russia, and NK moving forward with their delusions of grandeur.

I fully agree, though, that Israel getting special treatment is inequitable, and Dem leadership is out of touch with the people most likely to vote for them next year. I don’t know about you, but I think Biden getting primaried is a distinct possibility.

Border security remains a political liability for Biden heading into 2024, as polls reveal voter dissatisfaction over the president’s handling of migration at the southern border. Since taking office, his administration has grappled with record high arrests at the US-Mexico border amid unprecedented migration in the Western Hemisphere – contributing to a shift toward stricter immigration measures within the administration.

            https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/18/politics/biden-allies-immigration-measures/index.html

His administration is arresting more migrants than trump did…

Despite campaigning on fixing what trump was doing.

Biden, who pledged to restore the US immigration system during the 2020 campaign, is now considering immigration restrictions that stand to have lasting implications for migrants, a move that could backfire with his progressive base. While the tone and policies from the president are still markedly different from former President Donald Trump – who over the weekend doubled down on saying immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country,” language condemned for its ties to White supremacist rhetoric – the concessions from the White House to get aid passed are now frustrating the people who are expected to hit the trail for Biden next year.

The only difference is republicans are unapologetic about it

While Biden wants to get credit from both sides.

He wants conservative votes based on his administration’s actions, while wanting progressive votes for his empty words.

The opposite will happen. Conservatives care about words more than actions, and progressives care about actions more than words.

So Biden has pissed off both groups while managing to harm a vulnerable population.

Really a great example of how moderate politicians fuck everything up.

Technically tho. Yeah, I shouldn’t have said “decades ago” Biden himself was complaining about it just a few years ago and what his administration is doing today is even worse than what was happening back then.

But we’re not supposed to talk about that, because moderates want to convince people acknowledging Biden’s flaws are worse than his flaws. They want unquestioned support from voters and us to willing ignore reality.

Which I’m just not prepared to do.

Why is Ukraine aid being tied to immigration policy in the first place? I know the political reasons, the right wants tougher boarders and the left wants to support Ukraine and the centrists want both but the issues are mutually exclusive.

Neither side is going to be happy and a compromise is that much harder when tying two things together than are completely separate issues.

And stuff like this is why young voters are bailing on Biden and signaling that they won’t vote in 2024.

Hard to argue at least I’m not Trump when you’re letting his lap dogs call the shots on border policy.

Pointing out that pretty much every poll shows Biden is a bad candidate and might lose to trump is going to get you down voted because apparently acknowledging something bad is probably going to happen makes people think you want it to happen.

There’s big Salem witch trial vibes lately.

But the only way Republicans win is depressed turnout, and the average voter just isn’t excited about Biden after the last couple years.

But too bad for America, because Biden has said he’s only running because trump is even though he said “at least 50” other Dems could beat him.

Biden isn’t going to let something like the potential end of American democracy get in the way of his ego.

I knew posting that that people would down vote for exactly the reason you stated.

I plan to vote for Biden and I don’t have a lot of faith in polls posted this far out.

However, I have been reading comments from young voters. Arguing at least our candidate doesn’t smell like shit doesn’t work very well if you let the other guy rub his shit all over you.

This week, lawmakers are trying to reach a last-minute agreement on tough immigration and border security proposals tied to a $100 billion legislative package that would provide foreign aid to Ukraine and Israel. The frail deal—being brokered by a bipartisan group of senators led by Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and James Lankford (R-Okla.)—seems increasingly unlikely to materialize before the end of the year.

Because young voters are stupid, ignorant fucks that do things like blame the President for what Congress does?

You’re right; that is why young voters are bailing on Biden.

Still, the possibility has prompted President Joe Biden to tell press that he would be “willing to make significant compromises on the border.” Several new outlets, including CBS News, have since reported that the administration is considering a number of proposals that would likely appease Republicans clamoring for more border enforcement. Among them would be the use of a Title 42-like authority to summarily expel migrants without hearings; the allowance of mandatory detention of migrants; and the expansion of fast-tracked deportations beyond the border.

Biden is signaling his willingness to support this bill if it gets him funding for Ukraine and Israel.

I get that politics works through give and take. But actions like this, on Biden’s part, means giving up young votes.

And shaming young people for having a conscience isn’t helpful here. Yes, it’s poor political strategy on their part. But taking them for granted is poor strategy on Biden’s.

Someone else already quoted the second paragraph of the article, so the heavy lifting here has already been done. You know why young voters are mad at Biden, but have chosen to construct a strawman to knock over instead.

Do you suppose that abusive rhetoric rooted in dishonesty is how to get their votes or keep them in the party?
