I prefer to use this instance as my primary, but I’ve noticed a lot of missing comments/votes/etc on posts from other instances. I’ll switch between this account and one on lemmy.world or Lemm.ee and notice that I’m not seeing all the activity. Does anyone know why?
Maybe a syncing issue? Are we lower on the syncing totem pole because were smaller or something? It mostly seems to happen with this account and not others.
I’ll make a reply sometimes from mastodon, and I don’t know where it goes. Sometimes it shows up in a thread, sometimes it doesn’t, sometimes it’s delayed. I don’t have a good enough grip on this stuff to figure it out exactly, but I suspect it’s a federation issue of some kind.
Getting into the nuts & bolts of how the federation scheme works would probably give some clues, but that’s a lot of work.
I’m still trying to get the hang of it too. I thought I had, but this problem keeps me account hopping sometimes to double-check that my view is accurate.
Someone mentioned language settings, so I’m going to check that out next.
They might not be federated with your home server
I don’t think any servers I view have defederated from us, especially not the big ones. It’s very odd.
Have you checked your language settings on this instance?
You need to at minimum select BOTH English and Undetermined in your profile on this instance, and any other language that you might wish to see on other instances.
I’ll double check this when I’m on desktop next. Maybe that’s the issue?
I think you’re limited to when the first person on your instance subscribed to a community on another instance - from that point on, all posts/votes/comments will shared with your instance and be visible, but before that, I’m not sure (you might get the post, but not the comments, or you might not get the post at all).
I wanted to comment on a couple of 2-year old posts I found via google - when searching from my instance, I found one post (but no comments), but not the other post. When I added my comment and re-viewed it through google, it was there alongside the 2-year old ones.
If lots of people are signed up to lots of different instances, then a ‘fediverse’ will grow as expected, but if a majority are congregated on a few big ones, it limits the potential for spread.
I’m still trying to understand all this, so I might be wrong.
Maybe, but it’ll be with recent posts on lemmy.world, and I’m positive people from here have posted or commented there, including myself.
