Russia marked the new year with the launch of a record 90 Shahed-type drones over Ukraine, as Vladimir Putin vowed to further intensify attacks after a Ukrainian strike on the south Russian city of Belgorod.

Ukraine said it had intercepted 87 of the drones, but a 15-year-old boy was killed and seven people wounded by falling debris from one of the downed aircraft in the Black Sea port city of Odesa, according to the head of the region’s military administration, Oleh Kiper. Debris also caused a number of small fires, including at the city’s port.

In the western city of Lviv, Russian attacks severely damaged a museum dedicated to Roman Shukhevych, a Ukrainian nationalist and military commander who fought for Ukrainian independence during the second world war. University buildings in the town of Dubliany were also damaged, although no casualties were reported.

Writing on social media, the Lviv mayor, Andriy Sadovyi, described the strike as “symbolic and cynical”, adding “this is a war for our history”.

No. It isn’t. This isn’t some weak state flailing about. This is a major world power, with a fair amount of material wealth and industry, actively pursuing an evil agenda for the sake of the egos of a few political personalities and fascist, right-wing domestic politics. There’s nothing to pity here.

87 out of 90 is a big number and shows that defence systems work, only needs further supplies and maintainance. Guys know their shit as it seems.

What stunned me is that the yearly address by the Pu was toothless. Nothing like warmongering a year ago. Does it mean something?

80 years ago…so the youngest soldiers have got to be almost 100 now? It makes sense that they’re well past their prime.

Was not even remotely the same military and also the military that occupied east Germany was heavily dependent on the support of the west for supplies and intelligence.

You realize that all Soviet republics were part of WWII? A lot of the success was due to the fact that SU was able to throw millions of people (including Ukrainians) into the grinder. That same tactic is failing russia miserably because unless you only get your news from russian propaganda you will quickly realize just how many people they are losing constantly.

That’s what they want us to believe, but there are so many giant caveats in the narrative that it’s rendered pretty meaningless. The only things the Red Army of WW2 has in common with Russia’s current army are the language and a willingness to throw lives into the meat grinder as a tactic in and of itself.

With the classic Russian tactic of burying the enemy under Russian dead. Plus the natural brutal winters.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Russia marked the new year with the launch of a record 90 Shahed-type drones over Ukraine, as Vladimir Putin vowed to further intensify attacks after a Ukrainian strike on the south Russian city of Belgorod.

Ukraine said it had intercepted 87 of the drones, but a 15-year-old boy was killed and seven people wounded by falling debris from one of the downed aircraft in the Black Sea port city of Odesa, according to the head of the region’s military administration, Oleh Kiper.

Writing on social media, the Lviv mayor, Andriy Sadovyi, described the strike as “symbolic and cynical”, adding “this is a war for our history”.

The Belgorod attack followed an 18-hour series of Russian airstrikes beginning on Friday that killed 49 people, which Ukrainian officials described as the biggest aerial barrage of the war.

He added Moscow wanted to end the conflict, which the UN estimates has killed more than 10,000 Ukrainian civilians since February 2022, “as quickly as possible” but “only on our terms”.

One person was also killed and another wounded in shelling on the Russian border town of Shebekino, the regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said.
