Does anyone here use one of these UPS?
I have a CP1500PFCLCD with an RMCARD205 and I’ve been reasonably happy with it. I put my stuff in a nice 25u startech rack because cat, so I was looking to take advantage to upgrade to a bit beefier UPS.
The PR1500RT modesls look to use the same network card so I figured I could save some money switching if I stay with the brand.
I just have a concern about fan noise and was wondering how loud or quiet these things are since I will be sitting next to it all day when working. It doesn’t need to be silent, since nothing else in the rack, though currently nothing like the levels of typical rack equipment. I don’t care if it’s loud if power goes out, just what it’s like when it’s on line power with a fair amount of load.
I was also wondering about the perceived value of the cloud (PR1500RT2UC / PR1500RTXL2UC) vs non-cloud version. Does anyone find value in this feature if they’ve used it? It seems quite expensive and maybe fairly redundant to the network card.
I don’t really see myself wanting to add the extended battery module either, but that feature is clearer to me.
Just trying to do some research to balance what I spend vs ending up with buyers remorse because I’m missing a feature I end up wanting or can’t stand the noise it makes. Thank you.
I suppose if you want to tinker with the device remotely the cloud feature might be useful. However, I know I have personally never felt the need to tinker with a UPS. They are a set-it-and-forget-it appliance.
I just put a physical label on each one listing when the battery was last replaced, so I know when it is time to replace with a fresh one.
Edit: Nor do I trust them to keep up to date with security patches for an IoT UPS. Remember, the S in IoT stands for security. Don’t add any IoT devices to your network you don’t need to.
Yeah, I’d avoid the cloud version, but SNMP monitoring on the networked version is nice when you want multiple things to shutdown without relying on a single host.
Yes, this is why I have the RMCARD205… NAS, netgate, etc. shut down if the UPS battery gets too low.
Having that already I don’t really see what the cloud connectivity gets me, other than maybe easier access from random places, but to BombOmOm’s point, who is really tinkering with their UPS from afar on any given day. My only reason for asking is that It looks like cloud functionality built in (and a separate ethernet connection) and can’t be added later, so if there’s a genuine good use case you learned of later you’d be SoL. I can’t imagine a reason off the top of my head, but I’ve never accused myself of having a great imagination.
I have a OR1500LCDRTXL2U on my desk and it’s silent unless running on battery.

Not really what you’re asking for, but there are enclosed racks with sound isolation. Though they are a bit pricey, to my way of thinking.
