Depends a bit on how sensitive you are for claustrophobia. In a sense you can read it as people being stuck in their holes for eternity in some kind of trance.
This can get a very weird feeling of destitute loneliness, akin to a astronaut slowly drifting off in space. It’s not horror per se, but some perceive it that way.
I never really got what was so spooky about it. My unpopular opinion is that it’s a pretty mid story that’s saved by good illustration.
