  • Realistically it is difficult, I agree, as capitalism doesnt look to be going anywhere and the current environment doesnt seem like one where increased regulation is likely to get passed. Honestly I think the most realistic path to some improvement at the moment is research into automation tech for the kinds of farm roles that currently rely on cheap labor. Not that capitalists wont just take the cost savings and still pay people less, but its at least possible to pay people more without increasing the cost of staples if the available revenue can be spread across fewer more productive workers, and because operating complex machinery and maintaining it take more time to learn, such workers at least might have a better shot at organizing and thereby forcing that wage increase, because their skills could be harder to replace. And because the technology theoretically allows for increased profits, funding developing it might stand a chance at still getting through even current political conditions.

Honestly, that might be required even in a more equitable economic system anyway though, at some level that kind of work seems like it would have pretty slim margins, so even if the profits were distributed fairly, it still might not be enough to make those jobs not terrible.

  • Yeah, I’m absolutely opposed to this deportation thing, it’s cruel and if anything I feel that we should be encouraging more immigrants to come here, but the “it’ll be bad because it’ll get rid of all the people who do these jobs american citizens don’t want to do” line does sorta gloss over the fact that if the job conditions are so bad that if people have literally any other option the role goes unfilled, something probably needs to be done to improve the conditions of that job, especially if it is as vital as food production.

  • I suspect its more that they just arent as “important”, in terms of extreme wealth or active political power, as some of the other guys. Its not like Trump, who both was running for office, had judges in some of his cases that he put there, and who now has an electoral victory, and its not like the ones in congress, who are, well, in congress and therefore have other congresspeople to protect them or at least want them to stay if theyre on the same side. A lawyer and a guy who is rich, but not like Jeff Bezos rich, just dont have as much protecting them, which both means they cant get away with stuff other guys can, and if one is more cynical, represent people who cant fight back as much if thrown under the bus.

  • I mean, it isnt like it is the job of women to sleep with men in order to prevent them from becoming incels, that would be essentially like victim blaming at a population level. Im also not really sure that it would do much: most women arent going to do this, so the impact on average men’s dating prospects is much smaller than the total lack of dating for any women that actually go through with it, but nobody is seriously suggesting that doing so will turn them into something akin to incels.

I dont expect this would really help much, beyond the obvious personal benefit that not becoming pregnant in a state that is hostile to women’s reproductive health would have, but incels were going to hate and complain about women regardless of the sexual habits of those women, so I dont see it really making things worse in that regard either.

  • Which hardly matters when people are taking the homes of people living there currently and killing them. What difference does it make if some of someone’s ancestors centuries ago lived in that general part of the world?

You could justify European colonialism in Africa under similar logic, on the grounds that since humans evolved there before spreading out to the rest of the world, all Europeans have ancestors that lived on that continent at some point in the past and would merely be “reclaiming” it.

  • Sure, Isreal does technically have the capability to completely destroy Palestine in one quick operation, for instance, it could just use some of its almost certain to exist nuclear weapons on the relatively small area of Gaza. However, consider for a moment what the actual consequences of that or a similarly destructive action would be: Isreal may be powerful in its region, but it is not a global superpower after all. It receives considerable support from other countries, particularly the US and much of the EU, and losing that support, or even worse, managing to actually draw their anger, would put them in a dangerously vulnerable position with a fairly small population and land area and enemies on all sides. As it stands, their current actions have made supporting them somewhat divisive and politically charged in the west, but havent broadly lost them support, but doing something that blatantly indefensible might just be enough to do that. Further, the current Isreali government from my understanding doesnt have a perfect grip on popular support and power, and doing something that heinous might risk losing them domestic support as well.

  • Honestly I think we should recognize it. The place has been de-facto independent for decades now and effectively operates as its own state. It has a historical basis for its existence (not to say this is required to create in an independent state, but it helps explain why the people in the region might want one) and has its own military force such that reuniting it with the rest of Somalia would require another war over the matter. Given this, what is the point of making life harder for the people that live there by subjecting upon them the difficulties that come with living in an unrecognized state?

  • I suspect that long term, if more states keep end up passing laws about this, it might drive people away from dedicated sites for this content and towards pages made for it on social media type platforms instead. These laws tend to stipulate that they apply only when a certain percentage of a website is adult content (for obvious reasons I imagine, if just one instance was enough to apply then they’d apply to basically any platform with user generated content, since people are inevitably going to try to post it), which leaves the very obvious work around of just mixing it into a site that also contains mostly other types of content.

  • It doesn’t really do all the work of an artist though. It generates pictures, but consider that a camera also generates pictures of things, and yet photography is considered an art form these days, and one’s results from doing that can vary quite a bit between someone who understands both artistic principles and how their tools function, versus someone who does not. Having an image generator does not also entail knowing what to ask the generator for, or how to make any adjustments to it’s output if it gives you something that is close to what you envision but not quite there. If anything, I personally suspect a more mature version of the technology will get integrated into art tools in some way rather than looking like it currently does, because a text prompt is a somewhat vague and inexact way to describe an image. If you ask it for a spaceship, for example, it’ll give you some sort of spaceship, and if you ask it for a specific spaceship from pop culture it may likely give you that, but if you’re imagining a specific design for a spaceship, with specific details, that does not already exist in existing art, it would be very hard to completely describe that just through text, versus if you could start sketching out and have it sort of act as a kind of graphical autocomplete that you can steer in given directions.

  • So far as I understand, brown isn’t really a proper wavelength of light on the spectrum (there are a number of colors like that actually), rather, it’s a dark orange. So if you made a brown colored translucent filter and shone a light through it, you’ll actually get orange light, just presumably less of that light making it through than from a more saturated orange. It’s sorta like saying you can get black light by putting a black filter over a light projector: you’ll get black at the projection area I suppose if no other illumination is there, but there would be no black light, you’d just get that color by blocking the light entirely.
