  • In theory, An expat is someone sent abroad on short/mid-term mission while working for an employer, while a migrant is someone moving abroad to find a job and sometimes to start a new life.

This means that, if let’s say if a Mining company in Ghana sends someone to New-York to be the “US sales director” that person would be an an expat While an American opening an hotel in Ghana would be an immigrant.

But indeed, in many cases : Expat = European/North-American, Immigrant = From somewhere else

  • It used to be normal and accepted to have different account for different things on the internet.

Let’s take a very mundane example you’re taking singing class, great but at the moment you’re quite bad. However, you want to exchange with other beginners and student from your music school. Do you want your sport club buddies to know about it ? An we just talk about trying to sing a scale on pitch.

There is tons of more “private topic” that you don’t want evenyone to know about even though you want to talk about on the internet.

Despite what meta or tik tok think, separating account is great as it let you share stuff with a sub group of person.(also no doubt that big influencers, public figure and more have a hidden account)

It’s still not that uncommon, especially on the fedi or reddit to split accounts or use throw away account for more private questions.

It’s how the social web is supposed to work, so not a big deal if you do it un good faith

  • Unless you have the control on the webpage hosting a content, it’s pretty hard to remove something out of the internet. Even if you do, people may-have back-up or screenshots, then there is place like internet archives where you’d find tons of old websites.

That said, tons of stuff end-up disappearing over-time. Look how many forum have closed down, is myspace still alive ? Recently, the French "Skyrock blog"platform closed down, but all of it’s archive have been given to the French national library so in a few decades, sociologist will have tons of data about the youth of the millenials

Some good practice of digital hygiene include :

    • Do not use your real name, and change pseudonyms

    • Beware of photos, at a point mass face recognition will be the norm, so assume you’re not anonymous, Posting a photo after proudly finishing a Marathon or earning a Karate black belt is fine. But if a photo isn’t fine out of context, don’t publish it.

  • The crazy part is that this video was made already one month ago, I didn’t realized warship started to intercept drones that early.

I hope a war won’t start, but It may-be an interesting conflict to watch, and with the massive impact cheap drones have in Ukraine and Armenia it may-be less asymmetric than the previous ones. A pitty that one more time kids will come back in wooden box to please a few rich assholes owning stocks in the defence industry.
