  • He has a legit point that Steve did not give LTT a chance to comment. “He doesn’t have to!” Maybe. But he gave the other side a ton of airtime/chances to comment. It was very one sided and while GN made some good points, it felt like a hit piece. And Linux, imo rightfully, felt a little betrayed by a guy he’d worked with in the community.

His reaction wasn’t great but it was that of a guy who was defending his team and from someone he’d probably consider a ‘friend’ impugning his integrity and dragging them without giving them any opportunity to comment or even letting him know it was coming–two very common practices/norms.

A unflattering view of GN vid is that he felt threatened by LTT labs entering the space and he wanted to get out in front of that an expose"how unreliable" they are. He didn’t give LTT a heads up or allow them to comment because he knew they’d have a solid response. He blindsided him on purpose.

All that said, GN did Linus a favor. It accelerated his transition away from CEO and forced them to review their dumb production rates and the videos that are coming out now are better than ever.

Ironically, it left a sour taste in my mouth about Steve and I haven’t watched any of his videos since.

  • Not all llaw enforcement or emergency services are in the clear. The Feds are all encrypted (except for some intentional in-the-clear channels for open comms).

One of the biggest criticisms after 9/11 was the lack of easy comms across agencies because of radio set ups, different 10-codes, etc.

Hopefully this is something they are accounting for with this change.

Also $400m doesn’t seem that crazy for an endeavor like this given the size of NYPD.

40k officers and staff + backhaul + tower upgrades + vehicle radio upgrades and installation /$400m

And is that $400m entire lifecycle cost? Over 5-10 years or whatever that’s really not insane.

  • I know snap isn’t popular among Linux nerds, but I was really having issues with the AIO docker setup and at the time I didn’t have the time to troubleshoot/fight it. I needed to give my family a file drop link to share photos for a memorial service.

I figured, the snap package was recommended on their site, maybe it won’t be horrible. To my surprise it was incredibly easy, has been rock solid, never had performance issues, and it’s always up-to-date.

Snap may suck for some use-cases but this one seems to be right in it’s wheel house.

It also has an export/backup capability built in.

  • Appletv has some of the best content out there. They may be the last one standing for me at this rate.

Silo, severance, invasion, foundation, slow horses (though this latest season is pretty meh), for all mankind, and there is another one I’m forgetting.

I think companies like apple and Amazon had?(have) a huge advantage when it comes to their streaming services and content. They don’t need to make money on them. They can take risks. They can let a show build. Netflix kills shows too fast. Why? Because they don’t have a billion dollar business that can cash flow content that might not be hugely popular right out of the gate.

It sucks Amazon is going down this path. If they put ads I’ll pay the $3, but I’m cancelling my music subscription with them to pay for it $10/mo.

  • He reportedly joked that the secret to a long marriage was ensuring your spouse was “someone who is always mildly sedated so she can never realise there are better men out there”

“In what was always understood as a private conversation James, the Home Secretary tackling spiking, made what was clearly meant to be an ironic joke - for which he apologises,” a spokesperson for Cleverly said in a statement.

So a self-deprecating, incredible obvious joke, told in private to friends, has people jumping to be offended!

People really need to save their outrage for serious stuff because being outraged over something like this minimizes actually serious situations. It’s like the boy who cried wolf(read: outrage).

Edit: is also fairly obvious that most of you just read the headline and popped in to be outraged. Merry Christmas!
