But then, because their claims are so outrageous, the media picks up onbit and runs with it, without bothering to be proportional to the number of people causing the problem in the format place.

Yes, those have always been with us. But their reach has been limited by the amount of work one person can do.
The added threat of AI generated misinformation is that it can be automated and done at an overwhelmingly massive scale.
Spoiler alert: we’ve never been able to trust everything we read on the internet.
But in more equal terms, not with all the special exemptions that were present under the previous terms.
