Oh, yeah, don’t get me wrong, Google is highly unethical, and I avoid any and all Google related products whenever possible.

Selling Chrome, however, doesn’t really stop them from doing damage.

The part about not allowing them to bribe pay other companies to use their search is a much better idea.

And regarding their influence over the internet… we need stronger regulation to prevent any company from having that much control over an essential service.

Um, that wouldn’t change if Google “sells Chrome”, though.

Firefox uses Google Search as a default, so does every Samsung phone (and most other Android devices).

Unless the DOJ is telling everyone not to implement a default search engine (and let the user decide upon first opening the browser), then who owns Chrome really doesn’t change much.

Other remedies the government is asking the court to impose include prohibiting Google from offering money or anything of value to third parties — including Apple and other phone-makers — to make Google’s search engine the default,

This is the only thing that makes sense, but “sell Chrome” is a laughable request.

If you’ve got a browser that supports plugins, then you can use the floccus add-in. But for Android, I use the floccus app since it’s just easier.

Floccus is primarily a bookmarking service, but if you want to save articles for viewing later Linkwarden might be a better fit.

If the experience that a paying customer gets is worse than the experience they get from pirating, then that’s the fault of the company selling that enshitified experience.

I’m sure that could be true. I haven’t witnessed people being inattentive while messing around with their radio/air con, but I have seen plenty of people on their phones while driving. You can spot them easily because they are still stopped when the light turns green, and then when they finally go they are phantom breaking for a few hundred meters!!!

Yeah, a lot of repair sites come up with pages that have just hundreds of Q&A’s, but often times they don’t make sense or aren’t even related to the topic! Once you realize how much time was wasted on these garbage sites, you don’t even feel motivated to keep looking for answers.

The big difference is that high quality human generated content is often based on reputation, a history of quality content, and frequently reviewed by experts in the field (very common for medical articles).

But AI has none of that. It’s 100% quantity over quality, and that’s just internet pollution as far as I’m concerned.

We really do have to figure something out, though.

Not as bad as the AI-generated articles showing up in search results. Some websites I get driven to make absolutely no sense, despite a lot of words being written about all kinds of topics.

I’m looking forward to the day when “certified human content” is a thing, and that’s all search engines allow you to see.

There’s nothing more dangerous than someone in a vehicle too big for the road AND driving distracted. They might as well be firing off a machine gun into a crowd of people.

What happens when your Synology fails?

I can’t speak for other users, but my Synology setup looks like this:

• NAS - 1 drive redundancy via hybrid RAID.
• Important folders have recycling bins enabled and I have versioning, too.
• Daily backup to a local external drive.
• Daily, encrypted backup to the cloud.
• Monthly, off-site HDD backup.

This is honestly a much more secure way of storing my photos than Google Photos.

Synology Photos has been a great alternative, not only to back up my photos/videos to my nas, but as an easy to way to search/organize/share them.

But for the absolute best subject recognition, tagging and search, I purchased Excire Foto (local AI, local database, etc.).

I get these all the time, so I feel your pain.

And then you get the follow-up… “I wanted to make sure you didn’t ignore the last three emails I sent…” blah, blah, blah. Go swallow glass!

That’s a lot of terrorism without being shot and killed by police. Wow.

That’s one of the most unethical ways to have users unsubscribe, and it’s done on purpose.

Yes, it’s abundant. But it is still a finite resource that needs to be mined/harvested, and what will that look like when the EVs are running off sodium-ion batteries?
