It’s polished and easy to use, it leverages all the work that goes into Debian and Ubuntu, but it’s still Linux under the hood and doesn’t forbid you from getting into the weeds.
I run Mint Cinnamon on my work machine, developing software for embedded Linux products, and I haven’t had any regrets.
Honestly I think unfinished drywall has more personality. It’s utilitarian and rough around the edges, without the shiny surface veneer.
That new Jaguar logo is like somebody took a beautiful old house full of exposed brick and wood work and put a coating of white paint over everything.
What they wanted was for their 7,000lb full size truck they use to commute to their office job to cost less than $100 to fill up, while having good enough sound insulation in their walls that they don’t hear the screams from the collateral damage that might unfortunately need to happen.
Obligatory reply that it’s no less amazing and shocking when you’re watching it from the inside.
No less confusing either. I just have to hope that it’s more ignorance than malice, but the two often go hand in hand.
The browser-based versions of the M365 apps work great* for me in Firefox tabs on Linux. I prefer them being just apps/sites that I use as needed and not deeply integrated with the OS just because the same company made the two.
They should pass a resolution that all EU member nations shall create official Mastodon and Lemmy instances. Moderators and admins would be actual jobs constrained by the relevant national or EU law.
(Or replace Mastodon and Lemmy with whatever open platforms you deem appropriate)
That’s all well and good, and that’s currently my policy.
But that’s an entirely different discussion than whether banning a certain propaganda platform is worth doing and would cause the intended results.
They are raised in an atmosphere of negativity and hate that’s so pervasive they don’t even realize it’s a thing and that there are other options.
I come from a white catholic family and I lived in a properly rural area up through first grade. Like I lived in a trailer and my yard bordered a farmer’s corn field. And we knew the farmer because his land was nice for my dad to hunt deer.
The cynicism, persecution complex, and of course the casual racism & xenophobia aren’t something you are taught. They are just how the world works. It’s an assumed part of the culture and the social dynamic just like religion is.
That shit takes root deep in your neurons, and it takes conscious effort, compassion, and self-reflection to work your way out of it. And even then, some of the subconscious programming and visceral reactions persist and require a level of ongoing mindfulness about one’s right processes and behavior.
Oh is this an excuse to hop on the Mint praise train? Don’t mind if I do!
For me it was smoother than windows to install, it runs much better moment to moment (it’s like the people that made it were worried about making nice software rather than the business goals being pushed by their managers), and most importantly the fact that it is the “beginner” distro doesn’t compromise its capabilities. I am in the terminal all day every day and I use the machine to work on software for embedded Linux systems.

You can just use a graphical file manager in Linux like you might have been used to in Windows. When I open mine I see my windows partition and my USB drive listed on the left side.
I know Mint has one that I use all the time, but I’m not familiar with what’s in Ubuntu out of the box.
I assume that the red giant sun engulfing the earth will produce enough drag that earth loses momentum and falls into the sun permanently. We’ll still be gone by then, but noting is forever, even the earth itself.
Yeah, our daily stand ups are via Teams (international team too) and it works pretty smoothly.
One oddity I’ve noticed is that when working from home and on (fast) Wi-Fi, it will hang for a moment and say the connection has an issue, but then be fine for the rest of the call. When I’m in the office in don’t think I’ve seen it do that.
I keep a Teams tab and an Outlook tab opened in Firefox on Linux at work, and I feel like I have a better experience than most people using it on windows, which seems crazy.
Maybe search for killed while on autopilot?
This is why I still have windows on the machines at home. There’s always some niche device, especially for my wife’s crafting, that only supports windows.
But then at work thanks to VMs I use windows and Linux side by side every day.
This was me, with my few random ryobi tools, until I needed something new and saw one of those big combos of several tools from DeWalt was half price. So I lucked out being in the right place at the right time and got the best of both worlds.

You owe it to yourself to try it out! I recommend dual booting into Linux Mint Cinnamon for a while and have your windows install to fall back on to. That or one of the gaming-specific distributions, but from what I’ve seen Mint does all with gaming too. It’s a good all-around starting place, and there are a lot of resources because it’s popular and built off of the most popular distro. I installed it on my work machine (software engineering) and I’ve felt no lack of capability or a need to switch to a more “hardcore” distro.
